Community Tasting Notes (average 93.9 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 83 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by steinersing on 4/29/2024 & rated 97 points: Very impressive and best in the line up. Sexy nose and depth and length. For me perfect now in terms of aging. (166 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/2/2024 & rated 95 points: Some nice Burgundies (Chicago, IL): This feels like it's still too young. While the lovely red fruit is on full display here, there is still so much structure on the back end of this wine to resolve. It seems to me that structure comes more from the acidity than the tannins right now (though there are heaps of both). This is ripe, but not in the way Vogüé is -- it's more of a crystalline quality and far less of that intense brooding nature. For my palate, not yet at peak, though it is certainly an impressive bottle of wine already. (982 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 12/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Superb. Really complete, charming, and precise BM. It lingers. In a great spot now but maybe not quite at peak. Has reached a new level since my last bottle few years back. (791 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 12/13/2023 & rated 96 points: This is really coming around. Lifted floral aromatics. Concentrated, persistent, red fruited palate. (961 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 8/14/2023 & rated 94 points: Young, powerful, explosive red cherry bouquet and Chambolle perfume that leaps from the glass. Sexy and racy. Elegant soft edges but delivers loads of concentrated red and black fruit. Has a bit of everything, energy, power, high aromatic expression, elegant florals, robust black cherry. (1303 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 3/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Next to 2002. Similar to last bottle, this is broad and accessible but somewhat thin. 93 (1628 views)
Tasted by TWSA on 12/21/2022 & rated 92 points: Nose: bubble gum, musky, cherry, hints of tropical fruits, green tea
Notes: The Roumier Bonnes Mares 2001 offers an absolutely unique flavor of green tea and candy. Despite the age this is still very fresh and welcoming. I must say that this Roumier makes an excellent representation of the Bonnes Mares grand cru and terrior. One should enjoy and appreciate the greatness of a Roumier red as it is becoming unaffordable nowadays. Although this has never been my preferred style nor one of my preferred Grand Crus but I do like this immensely and have enjoyed this wonderful treat! It is often quite difficult to make beautiful Bonnes Mares as the terrior can easily be overwhelming and the wine can sometimes be too candy like that will overshadow other flavors. I think Roumier and Robert Groffier can be considereed my favorite makers in this Grand Cru. As the wine is still quite fresh now I think it can safely last for another 15-20 years and it is good to drink now.

Tasted by WIBA on 9/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Seems still a bit tighter. For me a bit animal on nose but on the palate, very balanced and integrated and elegant. Also more on darker fruits. (1401 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 9/10/2022 & rated 94 points: Opened 4.5 hours before serving, perhaps could have used more time on palate but at expense of aromatics. Floral aromatics, on cusp of tertiary complexity. Palate had touch of rusticity with medium length. (1578 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 7/19/2022 & rated 94 points: A technically excellent and robust example, but not quite the showy, leap from the glass, hit you over the head aromatically playful experience that this wine is capable of. This afternoon this was deeply endowed and intense. Just beginning to show the florals and perfume. Pronounced tomato leaf at first in more of a Rouget style. Massive palate right now. Wait. Dense, structured. Not showing everything right now. Powerful but has real purity. Palate show a bit of textural silkiness / velvet coat at the edges but requires attention. Getting a little more rosy towards the end with some black tea spice. I'd wait several years before opening that again. (1817 views)
Tasted by liber on 7/8/2022 & rated 93 points: 2nd of 6, opened 2 hours then decanted 2 hours, perfect cork and level, now open for business if better on nose than palate, flavour profile as set out in note of 12/16, surprisingly lean with merest hint of mid palate hollowness which I believe will resolve with more time, early days, much upside, 10+ years. F+ for now (18). (1254 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 7/6/2022 & rated 96 points: Classic vitamin stink, very clean. There’s a certain uprightness to the palate, which avoids the savory. (1467 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/11/2021 & rated 95 points: Explosive, bright, energetic, flashy, racy, one of the sexiest and most expressive bouquets in Burgundy. Rosy florals, bright red and black cherry. Loads of black cherry power and structure on the palate, plenty of runway ahead for this. Silky edges but has lots of black cherry stuffing. Definitely an ‘iron fist velvet glove’ type wine. Big projection leaps from the glass. Youthful pastel / acrylic details on the nose. Highly elegant already. Consistently love this wine, don’t have it enough, should continue to be great. (2142 views)
Tasted by S1 on 11/4/2021: Chas Offlineorama VI, Another embarrassment of riches; 11/3/2021-11/7/2021 (Various locations): WOW, So much sweet perfumed spice in a basket of beautiful red cherries. Add in the multiple spice layers and the bright floral aromas wrapped in an explosion of pure power and you have WOTN, maybe WOTY. (2006 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/4/2021: Charleston VI; 11/3/2021-11/7/2021 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): Wow. Tart black cherries that are almost a bit unripe and yet kindof juicy at the same time. Spicy. Very elegant and structured. Still on the younger side and a wine that's made to continue to age. One of my favorites of the evening and a real treat to get to try. (2115 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 7/16/2021 & rated 96 points: Floral, sweet and super lifted aromatics. The animale emerges, blood and iron quite pronounced. Superb intensity and length. (2306 views)
Tasted by jchan1 on 7/11/2021 & rated 92 points: Salient iron aromatics. Quite reserved, but palate is still clearly delineated. Not what it should be. (2128 views)
Tasted by vetty on 6/25/2021 & rated 94 points: red and purple fruits, leather, earth, mineral, little wood, smoke, forest, tobacco. Very Bonnes Mares aroma. At the beginning it has great complexity but lack of concentration. Palate felt very loose. After 1-2 hrs aeration, the sweetness like lychee coming out, the velvet tannin, blue fruits, and it started to show concentration and richness, but still loose structure. Acidity is ok. medium body. Aroma is very Roumier, but body and palate are not that Roumier. Not as powerful as other Roumier Bonnes Mares. (1704 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 6/25/2021 & rated 94 points: Insane nose, so sweet and deep, pure Roumier elegance with stony spicy notes that reminds me of Clos de Tart (to be exact, the sweet spot between Morey and Vosne), less Chambolle meatiness here. Can dip and smell for days, never ending luscious red fruit, almost too charming. Palate is of good texture, yet notably thin compared to Roumier villages. Weight is trying to catch up throughout lunch. 96 nose, 93+ palate, 94-95 today. (1739 views)
Tasted by joe d on 6/21/2021: I’ve been hesitant to open one of these but decided that age 20 is a good place to start.
Very youthful as anticipated but not hard. Dark fruits, smooth tannin, and good mouthfeel. Glad we tried it. (1783 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/10/2021: Complex aromatics of smoked meats, spiced plum, black cherry and dried flowers. It is deep, penetrating and chewy, with so much intensity. It has power and length to burn, finishing with refreshing fruit rind bitterness and loads of earth. (1781 views)
Tasted by fatboi on 8/21/2020: corked... sad (2319 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 8/9/2020 & rated 95 points: Comparable to last one (same cellar) racy and sexy. Both sweet red cherry and black cherry. Perfumes and very floral. A little tightly wound but still very showy. Clean and pure. A concentrated black cherry core on the plate suggests longevity and upside. Beautiful. (2405 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 7/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Herbs, spice, dark fruit, meat and animal. Palate was surprisingly soft and accessible for a Roumier Bonnes Mares. More Les Cras than Bonnes Mares as I expected more power and depth. 91-92. (2664 views)
Tasted by BradE on 3/5/2020: More approachable (relatively) than the 2000 served tonight, but still young and in need of additional bottle time. Ex chateau magnum. (2668 views)

Rockss and Fruit (2/25/2007)
(Roumier Bonnes Mares) Structured, intense and ripe. Horsey with beautiful red fruit. Dripping with refinement and class even in this young state. Great every time I have had it.

Rockss and Fruit (3/9/2005)
(Roumier Bonnes Mares) I just love this vintage and this is one of the wines of the vintage for me. It went through so many phases. From gloriously open to slammed shut. As I uncorked it at the shop it was just singing. The aromas slayed me. Smoked meats . . . dark violets . . cinnamon . . . black fruits . . and you could almost smell the sap. The palate was velvet. Concentrated fruit. Flavors of fruit skins . . attesting to the youth of the wine. But pure and dense with alot of brooding earth and fruit underneath. So sappy on the palate with undeniable purity and silkiness. Some slightly gritty tannins and a beautiful dissolve on the finish. I know so much is there underneath the primary fruit and cannot wait to see in 10 years.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
