Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rikipedia on 12/30/2021 & rated 91 points: 15% Alc; light to med garnet to orange rim.
Penetrating bouquet with dried candied orange peel, pressed blue flowers, hot gravel soil, mineral, kirsch cherries or marinated cherries, brown sugar and dried spices. As the wine develops in glass, there are stewed fruits, red plum, liquorice with prune and musk sweets and a hint of soy.
The entry has a vibrant freshness with humbug sweets alongside garrigue notes that suggest coolness: mint and freshly picked lavender, wild Scottish heather and star anise. Overriding this is plenrty of brown sugar and an intense note of cracked black pepper. The alcohol seems generous and pokes through at time. Medium to full-bodied, with lively acidity the mid-palate has more marinated cherry going to cherry compote and musk sweets. A chewy texture with some richness, the tannins are sinewy and mouthcoating but not quite puckering - sticky perhaps? A long finish with some earthy notes. I see recently that this wine has a history of sometimes being volatile as per last time. (1654 views)
Jamais pareil, il me semble.

92-93 pts (2736 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 6/13/2020 & rated 91 points: Zoom blind tasting. Meium garnet, cloudy color. Nose of torrefaction, sweet spices, earthy, very much in the brown spectrum. There was a touch of oxidation in this bottle, so may be my score is on the low side. (3249 views)
Fyldig og litt plump, litt "in your face"-aktig, ganske alkoholrik. (3010 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 5/18/2019: Q2 2019 Tasting - Alsatian White Varietals (The Apt): An old favorite. We had just done a tasting of a bunch of Alsatian white wine varietals and so in switching to red wanted something that was a bit lighter and easier. No detailed notes, but this was the standard herbal and tea leaves and light red fruits and just lovely. The age seems to add a hint more body to the wine. Too bad we don't have more. (2504 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 5/18/2019: Q2 - 2019 Tasting - Alsatian White Varieties from around the World (New York, NY): When your '01 Pegau is corked and your friends pull out a '07 Chateau des Tours Vacqueryras - it sure does bring the smile back to your face:-) As always one of my favorite producers. The nose has all the characteristic Rayas perfume of potpourri and tea leaves. On the palate, this is drinking really well now with cherry fruit, herbs, and black tea leaves. Very pretty!  Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/6/2019: I always love these. Will say the first taste you could tell this was a hot vintage and I had a moment where I worried it wouldn't quite get into the more ethereal style with the tea leaves and red fruits. I shouldn't have worried. With a bit of time in the glass the more fruit forward blew off and this was lovely as always. I think the extra few years of age might give it a bit more weight. Was nice.  Tasted by JamesCRoberts on 12/1/2018 flawed bottle: Totally peaked. Undrinkable. (2050 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 9/5/2018 & rated 92 points: 2nd of 4. Sweet cherry/raspberry fruit, kirsch, lovely balsam, garrigue, lavender. Complex. Big, but delicious. (1915 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/24/2018: Tasted over two days. Some alcohol here, yet fresh and very Reynaud; a bit tight and vegetal upon opening. On day 2, this seems to be heading down, actually, while the 2006 is shining. Worried about this.

Tasted by rikipedia on 9/24/2017 & rated 81 points: Mid garnet to mahogany
Intense bouquet showing volatile acidity, spirit notes, pomace with plenty of balsamic, soy sauce and then brown sugar and molasses.
At 15% alcohol, the entry has an alcohol burn accentuated by the volatile elements. Ripe, porty with dried spices, turmeric, cardamon and baked fruit with soy, the wine feels a little cooked. Super rich with lots of toasted spices, there is little acidity, relying instead on a firm, noted tannin coated by glycerol.
The back palate shows shrivelled prunes, dried fruit mix, raisin, and a sandy firm extract. Sadly the VA never went away and become ever distracting. Nothing like the previous bottle! (964 views)
90 (+) pts (2666 views)
Tasted by theguy on 4/9/2017 & rated 85 points: Past its prime. Not bad. Just not memorable. (2224 views)
Tasted by Le Vinophile on 3/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Couleur brique intense, déjà bien évolué. (2398 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/10/2016 & rated 91 points: Dense, concentrated, almost heated at first - but it blows off; this is a heavy wine for now, much more so than usual for this producers, and you feel the alcohol, but it does get better with air, and I have a gut feeling, that this might come around. Only a feeling, though, and I understand those, who fear for the balance - but in Reynaud I trust... will wait a couple of years for the next bottle. (2589 views)
Tasted by KPB on 7/21/2016 & rated 91 points: Slightly cloudy. Nose overlays raspberries with brioche, dust, wax. But sweet and clean on the palate, lovely raspberry flavors, long tart finish. Delicious.... But why so turbid? (2604 views)
Tasted by PC73 on 2/1/2016: nice fruit on the nose
sour on the palate
licorice and aniseed flavour (2566 views)
Tasted by BrianNH on 1/6/2016 & rated 85 points: 15% alcohol. Portlike, overripe. The alcohol is very evident. This is not on a par with what I'd expect from this producer which I normally like a lot. (2403 views)
Tasted by pinot jaune on 10/24/2015: déception (2905 views)
Tasted by rikipedia on 5/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Alc: 15%; Light to medium garnet to mahogany rim.
Pungent, funky bouquet of garrigue, blackstrap molasses, brown sugar, undergrowth, shoe polish and a curious fennel and aniseed element.
A complex entry with lots of flavours bouncing of each other: warm crunchy brown sugar, shoe polish, cow hide and a piercing menthol element.
Vibrant acidity gives a spine to the wine, and there is an energy and incredible freshness that is compelling! Again the flavours are complex with roasted meat, fennel, liquorice and aniseed. There is almost a rustic element alongside brown sugar granules and pork fat! (Gammon glazed with black treacle. Full in body, there is a richness to the texture, yet sturdy, woven, almost hessian-like tannins with a mineral aptitude. As the wine opens, some peppery notes and strawberries come through, as does the farmyard note. the back palate is alive with fenugreek, sorrel and curry leaves; there is almost a pavlova, meringue with berries atop with a spun sugar cage. The finish is long with a tar-like coating. Exhilarating! (862 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 2/21/2015 & rated 92 points: First bottle of 4. Darker red than the 2006. This has intense cherry with Lovely garrigue, balsam and spices with a hint of sweetness on the long finish. This wine is a bit more ripe and rich than the '06 and the '04. (3000 views)
Tasted by Elvis1969 on 1/30/2015 & rated 65 points: Very alcohol-dominated taste and it killed the whole wine experience in my mouth. “Only” 15% according to the lable but felt a lot stronger. (2831 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 1/24/2015: It looked like there was a line of seepage on the cork, which was not pushed out. Potentially flawed.

Decanted. Waited about 1hr to drink. Light ruby, with some bricking on the edges. I was disappointed by this wine. As others have noted, there were intense fig and port notes. This tasted really overripe in contrast to the 2006, which was intensely perfumed (and similar in color). Some herbs as well, but very much in the background relative to the heady prune/port. On the palate, there is no disguising the 15% alcohol, which comes out in waves of heat and white pepper; all this was not visible in the 2006. A fair amount of tannin on the peppery finish. The only saving grace is that we had this with Lebanese food, and this held up to the spicing well.

Day 2: We had about a third of a bottle and I brought it out again today. The fig/port/prune has calmed down a little bit and this could be some really dark/medicinal herbs, maybe almost jagermeister-like (I don't know about the rest of you, but my experiences with jagermeister have been pretty uniformly negative). The heat on the finish is still pretty intense. Anyway, I was hoping this would get better, and I hope this was just an off bottle, but if not this vintage seems really not my style. (2999 views)

Tasted by Beerzebub on 10/30/2014: Tasting pour at Arlequin. Fig- and port-like aroma, rich, dark, with subtle notes of dried herbs. Sweet on the palate, and a bit savory. Some alcoholic heat, but it works. Good length. (3698 views)

Château des Tours

Producer website

(via http://www.leaandsandeman.co.uk/wine-producer/Emmanuel-Reynaud-431-04.html )

Emmanuel Reynaud is the fourth generation of wine growers and took over from his father at Chateau des Tours in 1997 and also at the infamous Chateau Rayas after the death of his uncle Jacques Reynaud. His wines are based upon very old Grenache vines, giving wines of little colour but great intensity of aroma (cedar) and flavour.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
