  • 15% Alc; light to med garnet to orange rim.
Penetrating bouquet with dried candied orange peel, pressed blue flowers, hot gravel soil, mineral, kirsch cherries or marinated cherries, brown sugar and dried spices. As the wine develops in glass, there are stewed fruits, red plum, liquorice with prune and musk sweets and a hint of soy.
The entry has a vibrant freshness with humbug sweets alongside garrigue notes that suggest coolness: mint and freshly picked lavender, wild Scottish heather and star anise. Overriding this is plenrty of brown sugar and an intense note of cracked black pepper. The alcohol seems generous and pokes through at time. Medium to full-bodied, with lively acidity the mid-palate has more marinated cherry going to cherry compote and musk sweets. A chewy texture with some richness, the tannins are sinewy and mouthcoating but not quite puckering - sticky perhaps? A long finish with some earthy notes. I see recently that this wine has a history of sometimes being volatile as per last time.

Jamais pareil, il me semble.

92-93 pts

  • Zoom blind tasting. Meium garnet, cloudy color. Nose of torrefaction, sweet spices, earthy, very much in the brown spectrum. There was a touch of oxidation in this bottle, so may be my score is on the low side.

Fyldig og litt plump, litt "in your face"-aktig, ganske alkoholrik.

  • Q2 - 2019 Tasting - Alsatian White Varieties from around the World (New York, NY): When your '01 Pegau is corked and your friends pull out a '07 Chateau des Tours Vacqueryras - it sure does bring the smile back to your face:-) As always one of my favorite producers. The nose has all the characteristic Rayas perfume of potpourri and tea leaves. On the palate, this is drinking really well now with cherry fruit, herbs, and black tea leaves. Very pretty!
