Decanted for 1 hour prior to drinking. Sadly, my last bottle of this wine. Darker in color than I was expecting, showing off aromas of tobacco, tart red cherry pit, wet earth, sautéed mushrooms, sprinkled with a bit of black pepper. On the palate, tart cherry and tobacco seem to take over, with some tar and pepper emerging in the long and satisfying finish. The tannins are still very noticeable, which surprised me this evening. This wine has quite lively acidity and will drink beautifully through 2023. A wonderful end to the evening. (816 views) | | Tasted by Jetflyr on 7/21/2015: Too young in 2015. Would have benefitted from more time in the cellar. (1268 views) | | Tasted by drrobvino on 2/16/2014 & rated 93 points: Had dinner at Nicola's last nite, ordered this wine, was still so very nice. Complex, earthy notes of soil and rocks, tart red fruit, so elegant and well balanced. Drinking beautifully now, will continue to do so through 2018, or maybe longer... Was combing through the impressive Italian-heavy wine list (via iPad, very nice), and this wine seemed to have the right amount of age and was the right price ($98 at the restaurant), so I ordered it. The waiter nodded in approval, explaining that their "most frequent customer" orders this very wine each time he comes, and adores it. The wine was served at the table in excellent fashion. It showed a medium ruby / garnet core, fading to a light garnet rim. The nose showed a typical old-school Nebbiolo red fruit profile of tart red cherry and plum skin, aptly woven in behind an earth-laden aromas consisting of mushroom, soil, leather, tobacco, and wet rocks. In a beautiful, developing stage right now. The palate revealed a medium bodied wine, with med alcohol (listed at 13.5%, thank you!), showing the immediate pedigree of well-aged Nebbiolo: elegance, finesse, and playfulness. The tart, red fruits were simply there to pay homage to the beautiful terroir that this winery obviously showcases with their winemaking style. Complexity abounds, with evident minerality, moist soil notes, leather and tobacco, and sour cherry and even raspberry flavors. The mouthfeel has a background austerity to it, which has mellowed with bottle age, revealing a firm tannin structure and med(+) acidity, leading into a med(+) length finish of cherry and earth flavors. Perfection. This is a high quality wine which has just entered into it's ideal drinking window. This wine will show further improvement over the next 2 years, and should continue drinking well through 2020+. The restaurant sold this wine off their wine list at $58, and I purchased 2 additional bottles for my home cellar. I will further evaluate the next few bottles, and perhaps buy more if they are as great. I will drink this wine every time I go to Nicola's until they are out of it! Showing perfect maturity. Enjoy this wine, but don't save it.

Amazing, lovely and wonderful fruit-forward Barbaresco. I am going to hunt this down and buy as much as I can. (1622 views) |
| Tenuta Carretta Producer WebsiteNebbioloNebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.
Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.
"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
