Community Tasting Notes (average 83.8 pts. and median of 85 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JCWmedia on 1/21/2015 & rated 82 points: my last of 3 bottles bought; dusty chocolate nose with brambly berry flavors and lush, but simple, fruit finish, even sweet, no tannins left at all, easy to drink; not as fruity on nose as earlier bottles, but I kept this longer than probably intended by the maker; as I drank this I tended to focus on the sweet finish and my impression diminished (3524 views)
Tasted by dfitzg2 on 4/9/2013 & rated 89 points: Lots of fruit. Nice balance. Smooth as glass. Clean finish. (5096 views)
Tasted by CCestaro on 7/28/2012 & rated 70 points: I don't and won't own any of this wine...but I have tasted it three different occasions.....just rough stuff.....sweet charleston chew comes to mind....not a food wine in any sense of paring (5776 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 6/16/2011 & rated 88 points: Compared with 2009 Apothic Red, which we preferred. This had a somewhat closed aroma, berryish, not very pronounced. Medium bodied flavors, balanced, no significant tannin, but one-dimensional. It has lost some of its fresh fruit "zing" since it first appeared. Best to drink up any bottles left. (7536 views)
Tasted by psamford on 3/16/2011 & rated 74 points: This was hated by the entire household. Even the non-snobs who claim to like "everything". Jug wine. Pretty bottle is the only positive note I can offer. (7981 views)
Tasted by dfsommer on 10/15/2010 & rated 79 points: It's like eating cotton candy. Definitely not something I could drink often. Too bad I have 9 bottles left. (5716 views)
Tasted by salsipuedes on 10/6/2010 & rated 82 points: Grape juice, couldn't finish a single glass of wine. (5086 views)
Tasted by Patches on 9/14/2010 & rated 82 points: It's been 8 months since last bottle and I still don't get this wine. (4288 views)
Tasted by ewineguy on 5/23/2010 & rated 88 points: Interesting wine. Color seemed fine, dark but not opaque purple. Not much on the nose and that was after reading some of the other tasting notes. I eventually got a bubble gum red licorice thing coming out of it. I agree with it being fruity in the mouth, possibly too much. It is early in the day and I am tasting, not drinking. I'll keep it open and try and balance the fruits with some cheese or nuts. It a fun taste. (4626 views)
Tasted by boyajian on 5/7/2010 & rated 92 points: Nose and palate are both fruit forward, some vanilla but really relatively basic.... However, the finish on this wine is simply FANTASTIC. Velvety and creamy really unlike anything else I've tried. I'm a huge fan of what they have done here. (4746 views)
Tasted by dfitzg2 on 4/14/2010 & rated 87 points: Think I agree with the general opiion that this is a light, fruity wine without great character. Pleasant enough, but not the value I was expecting. Hmm...will have to find an occasion to put a dent in the supply. (4825 views)
Tasted by senorvino on 3/12/2010 & rated 71 points: New World wine just jumped the shark. What is this?? Manufactured plum chocolate sugar bomb with so much vanilla slathered over the top that you know it's chock full of American Oak chips. 90, people?? We couldn't stomach more than a glass. (4876 views)
Tasted by arass on 3/6/2010 & rated 74 points: a strange wine. weirdly juicy and sweet. we could not finish the bottle. (4789 views)
Tasted by shakedown on 3/1/2010 & rated 75 points: Definitely not my type of wine. Tasted like cotton candy; sweet and not appealing. (5015 views)
Tasted by ToddR911 on 2/19/2010 & rated 80 points: A friend that loves sweet drinks gave this to us to try and said he loves it. Very fruit forward. Way too sweet for my taste. My wife said it reminded her of Robitussin. (5037 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 2/16/2010 & rated 79 points: Meh. Sweet fake fruit with heavy vanilla oak flavoring. This actually reminds me of Yellowtail Shiraz, but more polished. Yes, it's smooth and rich, but it's just uninspiring plonk to me. Tasting this right after a 2004 Halter Ranch Syrah really underscored what a mediocre wine this is. (4685 views)
Tasted by Mmollen on 2/14/2010 & rated 80 points: Cakey and strong vanilla. (5163 views)
Tasted by rmh66 on 2/2/2010 & rated 84 points: This reminds me of Layer Cake, but the bottle looks a lot classier :-). If you like easy-going, very smooth, low-acid, low-tannin fruity wine, this might be for you. To me, this may be good while watching TV, but not something I would drink at the dinner table. Smells of cherry cough drops, grapey grape, vanilla, and maybe some chocolate. Similar on the palette with the addition of some spice. Goopy and somewhat cloying unless slightly chilled. Could be good for someone that is just getting into red wine. I don't like this style actually and won't buy more, but I would recommend it if any of my description sounds appealing. In that case, it's a really good value for the money. (5316 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 1/28/2010 & rated 82 points: I'm not getting the hype on this wine. Yes, it is big, rich, fruity, smooth, and juicy. It is also very oaky, which masks most of the fruit character and results in a general vanilla/cocoa flavoring. This is yet another cheap Cali red wine homogenized by over oaking. It is one of the better examples of this style, though. Folie a Deux Menage a Trois is a similar wine, but better, less oaked, and cheaper than this.
I also don't get Parker's proclamation that this is "one of the greatest bargains ever from California". Hasn't he scored dozens and dozens of $10 CA wines 88 points or higher? This, together with the Jay Miller Spain fiasco, has me really doubting Parker's grip on reality. Sheesh. (4798 views)
Tasted by boyajian on 1/23/2010 & rated 90 points: Smooth! I've never tasted anything quite like this. Ruby red in color, smell comes across as a very unique grape, spice and berry infusion. Smooth in the mouth and does not disappoint in anyway! Rewarding and silky aftertaste. It would have been a bargain at $15, at under $10 its an absolute STEAL! (4755 views)
Tasted by Billyray on 1/22/2010 & rated 87 points: Picked this up at L.A. Wine Co. Plenty of fruit in the nose that goes well to the palet. Soft mouth feel and light in the finish. Wine Advocate give it 87, and I have to agree. (5270 views)
Tasted by Patches on 1/19/2010 & rated 82 points: I don't love this, but it may have potential with some age (but I doubt this will get better) It feels out of balance. Very candied fruit character which comes across as sweet with mint and chocolate notes (5069 views)
Tasted by parathesis on 1/17/2010 & rated 89 points: Interesting wine with a diverse aray of flavors. Nice mouth feel and a great QPR. Will go back and buy more of this for the price. Very different. (5099 views)
Tasted by samiamx_1999 on 1/14/2010 & rated 90 points: RP 87 - "best bargain ever"; and he was thinking it was over $10...sucker! 13.1% alc. Loads of red fruit, mellow tannins, and some cocoa/chocolate. Incredibly easy drinking stuff, almost like Sangria! Dark ruby color, medium to light weight, finish is a bit short, the wine just seems to disappear. A subdued nose also. Probably go 89 on this but given the price, 90 it is! (5086 views)
Tasted by dfontana on 1/9/2010 & rated 89 points: You better believe RP on this beauty, and for only 9 bucks. Incredible juice at this price. Load up if you can find it. (5086 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
