Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 84.5 pts. and median of 85 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by AlphaL on 2/28/2015 & rated 85 points: Very purple with some cherry and red berry forward. Mid palate very little acid or tannin to help balance. The finish was short. All in all, not a favorite wine even at the price. (1613 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 4/24/2012 & rated 86 points: PnP. Vibrant purple scarlet from core to rim deep but not saturated. Earthy herbal cherry and raspberry aroma with a touch of tobacco (cab franc influence). Medium weight with very soft ripe cherry tannin. Very plush ripe cherry black cherry flavors with a lingering herbal note. Weak mid palate, but not bad for the price and very quaffable. (2288 views)
Tasted by 23dex on 3/16/2012 & rated 87 points: like others have mentioned - a bit of fizz at the front, not a super well developed taste. not so good. had higher hopes for this wine. (2416 views)
Tasted by jdabrowski1027 on 7/5/2011 & rated 86 points: Santa Barbara Trip - July 2011; 7/1/2011-7/6/2011: Tasted at the tasting room in SB. A beaujolais noveau style wine that reveals blue fruits & tea on the nose. Fizzy on the palate that doesnt come across as that "serious". Spices and tannins linger on this interesting wine.  Tasted by Central Coast Wino on 3/16/2011 & rated 81 points: I had high hopes, as I love the Happy Canyon area, but this wine was a disappointment. I found a lot of tobacco and leather on the palate, with no bright fruit. I think it needed more acid and tannin. There was also a little fizziness up front, which subsided over the course of an hour. Unfortunately, not a buy again. (2748 views)
Tasted by msr on 2/21/2011 & rated 84 points: Nice Bordeaux-style blend, upfront and bold (1428 views)
Tasted by daveste on 11/17/2010 & rated 85 points: Intensely fruity, lush mouth feel, but not too much varietal character. Not much acid or tannin in the finish so nothing to keep but lots of fun to drink now. Good with beef salad. (1097 views)
Tasted by meistereder on 4/11/2010 & rated 85 points: A bit fizzy up front, undecanted. It was decent, considering the price. Not terribly complex or interesting, but drinkable. (1189 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
