Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mflesh on 8/30/2021 & rated 94 points: This is perhaps on the very back edge of prime drinking. Still pours a dark maroon, crimson pour. The nose is beautiful. Blackberry, bell pepper, iodine, hint of meat, roasted nuts and espresso bean and definitely am getting a tiny bit of age. The palate is definitely more youthful. Black fruits, black cherry, overripe blueberry, brambly to the front and middle. Still has a stiff oak tannin kind of grit on the finish but it really softened after 30-45 minutes showing more elegance. The finish is rather long here and dances on the tongue. Regarding future aging here, I think this one is best consumed within the next 5 years as I feel that tertiary notes are probably going to start peeking in. Definitely in a nice spot right now.  Tasted by AllRed on 10/28/2017 & rated 94 points: 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (Our house): Double blind. Aromas of dark fruit, mint and herbs. Abundant dark fruit on the palate. Balanced tannin and fruit; lingering finish. Excellent. (2046 views)

Tasted by kingboo on 4/29/2015 & rated 82 points: Purchased from an auction, so the bottle may not have been stored properly. Raisiny upon opening. Becoming slightly more balanced as time passes. But a flawed bottle that may not be indicative of what a properly stored 06 would taste like. The moral of the story? Skip the online auctions. Have purchased some very good bottles, but far too many poor ones. Not worth the risk. (3047 views)

Tasted by mflesh on 7/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Locked - up - tight. I will say that I didn't expect quite the 9mm of cork bleed up the side of the bottle (all the way around), for a wine that is ridiculously underaged. The cork popped with a dark red stain on the cork. Nose out of the bottle was all floral and light red fruit, strawberries, cherries. Wine was decanted to a dark red. Mild glycerine characteristics on the pour into the decanter. Nose was unchanged after 30 minutes of decanting. Wine was poured into glass. The nose was still rather unchanged - lots of red fruit, nostril stinging red cherry goodness. On the palate was a rather light to medium bodied Howell Mountain offering from LaJota, with some red cherry turning to blackberry, hint of blueberry and clove, sharp on the entry, earthy characteristics abounded throughout the mid-palate. The wine finished a bit earthy. This wine drank more like a Cabernet Franc in my opinion. There wasn't much spice, and this is certainly not full bodied at this point in time. This wine can use another 10 years of aging (easily). It's not a very good pop and pour - in 2020 maybe it will. Still not a bad wine at all. (4040 views)
Tasted by OregonWineGeeks on 2/22/2011 & rated 91 points: Had this for Lunch today at 38 Central, a really fragrant nose. Over the top cassis, berry and earthy overtones. A rich and full fruit with nice tannin finish. This will be excellent with red meat and lamb. (3758 views)
Tasted by mmurry on 12/18/2010 & rated 91 points: Wine and Cheese Pairing (Farpointe Cellar): This nose reminds me of wild strawberries growing deep in the forest. The spice and black currant add to enjoyment of the nose. Rich and thick on the palate, the tannins have a nice grip, with just a little sweetness. The mid-palate had some good spice, and the dark fruit is really strong on the finish. (3751 views)
Tasted by njmays on 12/1/2010 & rated 91 points: not ready yet. tight and reticent with the fruit. clearly will have great balance later on, but for now, the restraint is showing. (3388 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 10/16/2010 & rated 90 points: Purple-ink in color, sweet nose, grassy...enjoyed by many in our group. Albeit a nice bottle of wine, there was nothing memorable or remarkable. Nice gift. (2850 views)
Tasted by Michael6296 on 1/29/2010 & rated 90 points: Solid 90. Thans to Pat for sharing. (2216 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 11/14/2009: at the tasting, i commented to kevin that i NEVER see this wine mentioned on any wine bulletin board. then, when i go to post, i see that i had to add both the 05 and this 06 vintage to the inventory of CT! which means nobody is drinking it, either. plus, i admit it's 8-9 vintages since i had one of these in a glass. yikes, this is really not very good. harsh and stiff as a board in the tannin department.  Tasted by kstoddard on 11/14/2009 & rated 84 points: Big Red! (Sportsman's): Purple color. Sweet red fruit nose. Blackberry and currant fruit. Tart oaky finish. (3104 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
