Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by glou.sf on 5/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous nose with lots of floral character, violets, and cherries. The palate is quite light, but has lovely flavors of cherries, some savory notes, and black olives. Nice finish. Really lovely wine, fully mature and drinking deliciously right now. Definitely more on the subtle side and much less powerful than some wines next to it. I probably liked this quite a bit more than most people at the table. (1661 views)
Tasted by rlove on 4/9/2022 & rated 93 points: Jamet's 1995 Côte-Rôtie, while I've had some bottle variation, is quite good tonight with an ebullient nose of dark berry, black pepper, bacon, and violet. Dense fruit, balanced acidity, lithely structured with a persistent finish. (1522 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/29/2022: Jamet Day (Ada St.): Unfortunately a grumpy bottle with a muted personality and inelegant fruit. Some debate as to whether this was corked but I think it was just a weird bottle. (1898 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/29/2022: Jamet Day (Chicago, IL): I originally thought this was corked, but upon further reflection, I don't think it was (it was just funky). That said, this was pretty chunky and inelegant, and there just wasn't that much of interest here, sadly. (2447 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/12/2022 & rated 91 points: Flickinger Customer Appreciation Tasting (Casino Club - Chicago IL): Walk-around tasting. So much dense black fruit here with an alluring aromatic start. Very long, very firmly structured finish. Not clear where/ when this will deliver the great pleasure it develops in most vintages. (2528 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 1/12/2022 & rated 94 points: A wow, lights out nose that is both explosive and intricately complex with so much going on from fresh black fruit to dried black fruits, a range of smoked meat and game, pepper, bacon, and florals. The palate has similar complexity in a still fresh and round fruit package. Would've loved to spend a whole evening with this bottle. (1154 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/20/2021: A Year Later in Vero...; 3/17/2021-3/21/2021 (Vero Beach): This was also drinking incredibly well and kindof spot on for the day. It's more gamey in style than the other Syrah that we were having (even compared to the La Turque). Power and finesse. Very enjoyable. (1786 views)
Tasted by fatboi on 11/17/2020: A well made wine but was underwhelming. good structure and fruit but lacking depth. Will look to open another in the coming year. (1605 views)
Tasted by MattTM on 7/23/2020: DM Thursday Night Zoom Tasting: Tasted blind next to the 1995 Barge Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune and 1995 Ogier Côte-Rôtie Cuvée la Belle Hélène. Tightly would and wasn't giving much at first. Darker profile that the other wines in this flight and wasn't showing the floral notes I typically get from Jamet. Dark cherry, a touch of bacon, and plenty of spice on the palate. Rustic and curled up, not sure where this is going but I'd leave this for a few years to see what happens. (1973 views)
Tasted by rlove on 3/22/2020 & rated 93 points: Nineteen ninety-five is a good Northern Rhône vintage but has a mixed reputation for Jamet, yet I found this very good at 25 years of age. Soaring nose of black cherry and bacon. Silky texture, lively acidity, broad dark fruited flavors. Nose outperforms the palate but that's not unusual for Côte-Rôtie. Nearing peak but there's no rush. (1923 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 11/29/2019 & rated 92 points: In 750ml this time. Generally inline with previous note but less lively and ethereal. Still a solid Jamet. 92+ (2032 views)
Tasted by Bobhelge on 10/5/2019 & rated 91 points: Maybe one of the weakest Jamet I’ve had.The coolness, elegance and power is replaced by a more rustic and leaner wine. Beef jerky, juniper and charcoal. Ripe blackberry on the palate with a smokey sign off.
91+ points. (1661 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/10/2019 & rated 95 points: In magnum. A faboulous Jamet with bacon, olive, red currant, black fruit and herbs. Ethereal and silky with alluring acidity. (1845 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 3/22/2019 & rated 94 points: Perfectly in the window of drinking greatness. Poured a tiny touch brown. The nose is kind of an identity crisis. Black cherry, prune, plim, walnut, cassis. Entry shows a perfectly balanced and wonderfully aged wine with dark chocolate, aged raspberry, rhubarb, tobacco and fig notes. Middle is more delicate. "Funeral flowers," dried herb, dried tobacco. Finishes soft with fig and a hint of aged black cherry. Nice. Drink now or hold another 10 to 15 years. (1661 views)
Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 5/1/2018: White spice, olive, very savory. Loved the complex aromas. The palate was consistent, though a bit less expressive and less exciting. It did pair excellently with the short rib and meat dishes on the table. Probably 2nd best showing of the reds for me. (2414 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 9/20/2017 & rated 90 points: Smokey with dark soil. Somewhat disparate notes, although individually not unattractive. Lower acid finish on this bottle. (2594 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 7/28/2017: This was very good and on any other night would have been a stand out, but following the '96 Salon and the '88 Vietti Rocche - it did not shine as bright. Surprisingly youthful and still full of dark fruit, with that irony blood twang and lots of savory notes. My sense is that this probably needs more time to come fully together - I think the drinking window on CT is incorrect and think this needs another 5 years before drinking best. (2735 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 5/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Rare Northern Rhone Dinner (Tocqueville): Expressive and aromatic nose, but not as showy as that on the '99 which is just phenomenal tonight. Palate has intense black cherry fruit. Concentrated. Very good but less pleasure than the '99 which is comparatively forward and open right now. (3482 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 10/27/2016 flawed bottle: Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie Dinner (Formento's - Chicago IL): Corked (4132 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 6/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Smokey notes and dark fruit. Not overly complicated but high quality for the notes that it does have. (3169 views)
Tasted by BradKNYC on 4/26/2016: Two visitors, three birthdays and seventeen wines from all over. (ABA Turkish Restaurant): Always nice to check in on this sentimental beauty as it was the first Jamet I tried on release. The wine is still going strong and shows delicious black and red fruit, nice smokey and meaty elements with spices and herbs. Feminine in profile with terrific depth, elegance and juicy acidity. My red WOTN. A/A-. (3977 views)
Tasted by AtoZ on 11/29/2015: Needed a longer decent. Delicious. More feminine then Cornas. Got better and more pretty / floral. (3225 views)
Tasted by godx on 9/21/2015 & rated 92 points: Bit more polished and floral than the 95 Chave it was served with. Same level of quality as Chave but slightly different in style. Touch more red fruited in comparison. Both could use at least 5+ more years. Excellent. 92+ (3107 views)
Tasted by MikeATL on 6/27/2015 & rated 94 points: Allemand, Jamet, Burgs, Barolo, Yquem, and more: Earthy, smoky, meaty, but still ample fruit, on a foundation of solid acidity and fine tannin, drinking great but with lots of life left. (3612 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/25/2015 & rated 89 points: La Pyramide Dinner (Vienne - Northern Rhone Valley): Overall good, but slightly disappointing performance for this wine so close to "home." Lots of meaty black berry here, just a little more barnyard than I'd prefer and a big jammy. (3463 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
