Introduction

Board-O made one his winter visits to S FL and organized a dinner at Bistro Provence for the local group to gather. An excellent meal, and their duck is among the best available in S FL. A fun evening had by all.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1986 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Per Board-O, this has been a tannic wine that has taken a long time to mature and resolve. It is lean on fruit and has a tannic backbone (much like 98 Left Banks), but is complex on the nose and the palate. The fruit profile is of blackberry and raspberry, with a hint of earthiness, and a long finish that had just a touch of heat (probably due to the lean fruit). I enjoyed this a great deal, but is a wine to be enjoyed for its complexity and layers, and will not impress those looking more for fruit and power.

  • 2004 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Medium body and acidity with bright red fruit on the entry that turns darker on the medium length finish. A subtle wine that strives for elegance, but this bottle lacked some of the characteristics I look for in excellent Cote Rotie. Based on comments from those that had drank this previously, it was thought that this was an off bottle so I am withholding score.

  • 2001 Montes Alpha M 93 Points

    Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley

Medium to full body with dark fruit that finishes very smooth. Not a wine that grabs you with lushness or power, rather what impressed me was its nice sense of balance. A lovely bordeaux blend.

  • 1998 Château Nenin 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Similar to my last bottle from 18 mos ago as it had the same plum and currant fruit but was lesser bodied and the fruit has faded a bit. A touch of earth and leather on the smooth, 30-35 sec finish. I would recommend drinking these soon.

  • 2007 Pahlmeyer Jayson Red Wine 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Silky smooth for such a young cab blend and came across as refined and elegant with very nice balance. Got just a hint of sourness on the finish that kept it from scoring higher.

  • 2006 Denner The Ditch Digger 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Full bodied with low to medium acidity. Fairly ripe and fruit forward with mostly dark red fruit shining through with some peppery notes, but still has a nice sense of balance and does not come across as heavy or syrupy at all despite its scale. Drinking very well now and I would drink these soon.

  • 2007 Linne Calodo Slacker 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

I found this very similar to the Denner though got less pepper and it came across as just a little lighter in body and mouthfeel and a little higher in acidity. Always amazed at how the better Paso rhone blends can pack a lot of ripeness and fruit without coming across as overly thick or syrupy. Another well balanced wine that drank nimbly for its heft.

  • 2002 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very light colored (bordering on dark rose'), but had some pleasant raspberry and strawberry fruit with a peppery/spicy bite on the finish. Ample alcohol and glycerin made this wine come across as medium bodied even though the fruit concentration was quite low.

  • 1966 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Was quite lean on the initial sniff and taste, but after a little air and sampling some cheese at another's suggestion, the wine came alive with red fruit that had some sweetness on the finish when combining with the cheese. The nose also displayed some nice complexity that came across on the palate with tobacco, earth, and a bit of steminess. A treat to drink such a fine old bordeaux that is still providing pleasure at age 45.

  • 2003 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese *** 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

A very well balanced wine that was mildly sweet with the perfect amount of acidity. Got apple, peach, and citrus flavors with a somewhat thick texture that did not across as cloying or flabby, rather just a concentrated, but nimble, Auslese.
