The goal was to learn a brief history of port and some of the common styles. Wines were tasted by the group one at a time, with discussion over the style.
Ports were tasted in the order listed below.
The vintage and 20 yr tawny were the stars of the show, and the ruby port was disliked by all. The remaining wines were a mixed bag of preferences.
NV Croft Porto Fine Ruby 85 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Sweet, simple, slightly bitter, easy drinking. This was very disliked by the group due to the sweetness without much body.

NV Taylor (Fladgate) Porto First Estate Reserve 89 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Wow what a step up from the Croft Fine Ruby. Thick, viscous, yet smooth with a long yet simple finish.

NV Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Fine Tawny 87 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Eh, a tawny? This was somewhat harsh, bitter, with raisin. Full bodies with dried fruit and spice. The 10 yr TF tawny completely blew away this wine.
Me - 86, Wife - 89.

NV Taylor (Fladgate) Porto 10 Year Old Tawny 89 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Nice. Much, much better than the Fine Tawny. This was much more similar in style and flavor to the 20 yr than the Fine Tawny. This sported a pleasant oxidized/sherry flavor with a reasonable finish.

NV Taylor (Fladgate) Porto 20 Year Old Tawny 91 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
A step up from the 10 yr in terms of complexity and length of finish, but I expected this to be a giant leap better and just didn't find that it was.
Smooth, with spice, acid, dried fruit, brown sugar; and a subtle dried fruit flavor.
Very well liked by the group -- this was a close 2nd to the vintage.
Me - 91, Wife - 92.

2007 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Late Bottled Vintage 89 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
Surprisingly good, given the price point.
Brandy sweet but well balanced, with juicy berries and less spice than the 10 and 20 yr tawnies.
Me - 90, Wife - 88.

2000 Warre Porto Vintage 92 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
So smooth -- smoothest port of the night, hands down.
This was the group's #1 on the night.
