Introduction

An old school Chicago Italian eatery paired with some young Barolo.

    Corked!

  • 2004 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Decanted for ~12 hours, then back into the bottle, and consumed a few hours later. Served in a flight with '04 Azelia Bricco Fiasco. Fairly primary, yet approachable with good dense cherry fruit and florals. Still plenty of structure and firmness underlying the rich fruit. A fun check in, but this should get much better. More rich and forward than it's Azelia cousin.

  • 2004 Azelia Barolo Bricco Fiasco 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Decanted for ~5-6 hours, then back into the bottle, and consumed a few hours later. Served side-by-side with the '04 Scavino Cannubi. This is a decidedly more finessed wine with more dried fruit than plush fruit. Lots of dried herbs, licorice and dried florals present a more nuanced and reserved wine. Good structure, but again more suave and settled than the dense Cannubi.

  • 2004 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Decanted for ~4-5 hours, then back into the bottle, and consumed a few hours later. This was my favorite of the four '04 Barolos tonight. Huge, forward and rich nose of black cherry with sweet florals. The palate is plush and giving. All components working together. Young with a long, long way to go ... but fun and delicious to try now.

  • 2004 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Decanted for ~12 hours, then back into the bottle, and consumed a few hours later. This was the most backward and brooding of the four '04 Barolos tonight. A huge, dense and packed wine. It gave pleasure with food showing its multitude of textures and layers. But I'm going to wait at least a decade before touching my remaining three pack. This should age gracefully for 30+ years. 3-5 points of upside from here.
