  • Tasted blind. Ripe nose of blueberry and blackberry jam, in the mouth it’s more restrained but still lacking acidity, quite polished and one dimensional and not what I look for in a Barolo. Tasted like a Super Tuscan.

  • Just one not those nights when you pull the perfect bottle out of the cabinet. Cherry lifesavers with a wonderful 30 second finish. In its prime and proud of it. Drank it with duck entree. Lil bada bing!

Both intense and gentle on the nose. Perfume of sweet dry rose petals, touch of wood and tar. Bouquet is well balanced. Tannins are noticeably sandy, but not aggressive. Cannubi justifies its pedigree with exactly right level of everything. At this stage oak stands out a bit, but should better integrate in the next few years. Cannubi is the oldest single vineyard in Barolo. It combines both muscular and feminine styles of Barolo. However, it lacks the distinction of the best.

Paolo Scavino was among the first in Barolo to bottle wines only from own vineyards which makes it a true domaine. Founded in 1921 it actually came in vogue in 80s thanks to his son Enrico, who took over from father.

Scavino wines are made in modern style. Short maceration, fermentation with only indigenous yeasts. Elevation in mix of woods. 1st year with only 15% new oak barriques, 2nd year in large casks made of both French and Austrian oak.

Historic Cannubi vineyard (cru) with vines planted in mid 40s.

Barolo nose of rose petal and violets with some oak presence. Sweet aromas and lots of sun warmth. This wine is all about warmth which makes it perfect for autumn when the sun is still bright and leaves change to warm colours. Good grip of #nebbiolo with finely grained tannins and light body.
When you say Barolo is the king, Cannubi makes you think more of a Queen. Royal, but feminine. So delicate and elegant.

This Barolo is not overwhelming, but has everything you want from classic Barolo.

I usually give my Barolos at least 15 years after the harvest. 2004 is a top vintage which starts drinking very well now and will develop more over the decades.

  • Another beautiful wine from Scavino. The 04 is really singing. The sweetness of the fruit, the depth and weight of the fruit, are all fabulous. This is not a traditional Barolo by any stretch of the imagination. But I found it not too hard to put my biases against Scavino's winemaking style of this era aside and just enjoy the wine for what it was. Oak? Yes, present and accounted for. But still, an enormously pleasing wine. In a great place right now.

  • Outperformed the O1 Cannubi this evening. Fruit is sweeter, wine is more balanced. Quite lovely for a modernist Barolo.

  • Powerful, intense, yet balanced. A dusty note blows off after a couple of hours. Demands food & needs plenty more time.

  • Bruna's and 2004 Barolo Check-in (Bruna's): Decanted for ~12 hours, then back into the bottle, and consumed a few hours later. Served in a flight with '04 Azelia Bricco Fiasco. Fairly primary, yet approachable with good dense cherry fruit and florals. Still plenty of structure and firmness underlying the rich fruit. A fun check in, but this should get much better. More rich and forward than it's Azelia cousin.

  • Well balanced Barolo, acidity, red mature cherries, earth, medium body, 12 month of barrique results in soft oak, dark chocolate, in a great spot in the drinking window, long finish!

  • The second one was Paolo Scavino Cannubi 2004 and it was absolute beauty. The wine is from Cannubi, a grand cru in Barolo, and one of the most historic ones (could be traced back to 1752), with 290m in altitude with south and southeast exposure. The wine was concentrated and rich. The wine had a very thick body, and could smell fruit and oak on the nose. Apart from 2001, 2006 and 2010, 2004 is a widely-recognized good year for Nebbiolo, with long and cold winter, cool spring, warm summer, and a moderate autumn (warm in the morning and cool in the evening), as a result, the grapes were adequately ripe. On the palate, the tannins were round and ripe, a bit spicy, and the inner sweetness were brought out by menthol and dark fruit, and of course a very long finish. Sebastiano said Cannubi is one of his favourite cru. Stunning effort from Scavino.

  • Soft, fruity, easy drinking; tasty but not much depth.

  • Marvelous Barolo wine from the historical Cannubi single vineyard (Barolo village), a 100 percent Nebbiolo wine (subvarietal Michet, planted in the year 1946) that was aged for 12 months in barriques, an additional 12 months in large oak casks, followed by a further 12 month's refinement in the bottle prior to release. Intense ruby-red colored wine bricking somewhat at the rim and an overwhelming nose with layers of ripe red fruit and licorice, intermixed with tones of leather, cedar and tar. Rich, succulent, concentrated cherry and plum fruit on the medium to full-bodied palate, revealing a harmonious and very fine texture, great depth and a superb acidity that frames perfectly the ripe fruit. Extremely long and complex finish. This outstanding Barolo wine provides immense drinking pleasure at present, but it has enough structure and fruit to age for another 6-8 years.

  • Outstanding. Popped and poured more or less. Did pour into a decanter and drank over ~2 hours. In a great place right - no hard edges, smooth and well made. 94+

  • Dinner at Villa Tiboldi, Roero.
Much more accessible than the bottle we just had from Sandrone.
On the nose, mint, fine herbs, roses, perfume, rosebuds, flowers, and fine glue.
    Lovely Cannubi perfume!
On the palate this offers very power full fruit with loads of ripe lovely redcurrants & fat & juicy raspberries.
Fine and mature tannins, and very fine acidity.
A touch towards the feminine and more transparent type of Barolo.
Just a really lovely Barolo, from one of the top vineyards and top producers in the whole region!

  • Great nose. Lengthy finish. Far too young in the middle. Nice flavors, but needs better integration. I would give it at least 3 - 5 years.
