Bone dry and refreshing, this paired really well with our smoked salmon, the Christmas ham and other good fare at our Christmas table. really excellent at this price point.

  • 2017 Arnot-Roberts Gamay Noir El Dorado 92 Points

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado

Served at our Swedish style Christmas dinner, this beautiful gamay noir from California (Barsotti vineyard and Witters Vineyard, both in El Dorado county, in part made using carbonic maceration) was all that I could hope for. Had worried about the price tag, but as I love the wines from this producer I put that out of my mind.

Bright and fruity, with structure mostly in the form of vibrant acidity, and mild tannins sweetly infused like a vanilla stem rather than tea/cherry pit bitter. Dry and refreshing finish with a lot of tangy deliciousness and very easy to drink.

Has some nice sweet fruity complexity without going into the more darkly colored, heavily extracted gamay territory, and it just paired really well with all the sausages, hams, salamis, meatballs and with the Christmas spices used such as nutmeg, all spice, ginger, Szechuan peppers etc.

Brilliant and can really recommend this.

  • 2011 Duorum Porto Vintage 95 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

On the bottle it says that this was bottled in 2013, I am not really sure about the various entries for the wines of Duorum here, but would just for the record state that this was probably the best port I've had. Dense, yet light on its feet with good acidity and harmonious seamless fruit and wonderful texture that never gets cloyingly sweet nor harsh and bitter from tannic structure. This drinks so well now but has the makings for a century worth of storing it feels like.

  • 2011 Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Beerenauslese 90 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

The last bottle of this, we have tried three bottles after purchase. I recommended this myself after having reviewed the wine and felt it was a steal. The first two bottles did not fully live up to my own expectations and felt mildly clumsy and sweet in a somewhat artificial manner, with acidity less vibrant than I remembered. Still very good easy drinker though.

I would score those attempts in the 86-87 range. This wine, which we opened at the outset of Christmas dinner, to be served with some foie gras, but forgotten, and kept during the long evening in a ice bucket where it gradually warmed up towards a temperature of 14-15 degrees Celsius, proved to be something else; complex with cloudberries, rosebuds, peaches rising through the air as I poured one for the road for the remaining family members at around midnight. Finish is very pleasant with some spice notes that adds nutmeg and ginger complexity to the floral and fruity scent. Not sure if this is heavy enough to stand up to much food but it was perfect on its own as a sorts of second or third dessert.
