Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2017 Jean-Christophe Garnier Anjou La Roche Bézigon

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou

This was a great bottle off the list. Really expressive, fresh yet deep texture. Super racy but plump fruit, too. Flinty, honeyed complexities. This opened up a lot over the course of the night.

  • NV Laherte Frères Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Les Grandes Crayères 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Wow, this was a lot of fun. Brisk, chalky, saline, yet nice bready depth. Gorgeous, brisk, zingy, complex. So good with some fried oysters.

  • 2016 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Blanc 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Rich notes of toasted nuts, lemon crème, buttered croissant, with some salty, chalky notes. Plump texture, this is creamy and toasty, but has a nice underlying brightness to it as well. Juicy yellow apples and lemon curd with some mineral and peanut husk notes. Really pleasant. I'm not sure how long I'd age this.

  • 2011 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Plein Sud 93 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

This showed way better than I was expecting. I was worried it would be a bit tired and too feral, but it was singing. Very pale ruby color with a slight spritz. Gorgeous aromas of raspberries, red apple peel, candied orange peel, rose petals, tobacco, white pepper. Crisp and nervy on the palate. Crunchy, bright fruit (red apple, raspberry, red apple peel) mixed with lots of flowers, tobacco, white pepper, mint.

  • 2005 Nicolas Potel Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

At first, it was some tomato paste and goats, and I was sketched. But wow this changed quite a bit over the night. Grippy tannins, spicy, mulled strawberries, the fruit is aged more than I expected. Fresh acidity, some earthy, mushroom elements. Seems like the tannins will way outlast the fruit, so this was a good place to drink and let it open up with food.

  • 2009 Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet (Hervé Souhaut) Sainte-Epine 92 Points

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

This did really well in the decanter. Aromas of green olive brine, sea salt, bacon, smoky earth, with some deep cherries. Structured well with solid grip on the tannins, zippy acidity, it's balanced well. Crunchy, spicy black cherries mixed with lots of smoke, graphite, olive brine and bacon fat. Refined but still worthy of time in the cellar.
