Pinot Blind

Tasted Friday, June 10, 2022 by Nutty08 with 147 views

Introduction

Insane mixed of Pinot served blind from around the world. I did horribly at identification. Most were not decanted. I took no detailed notes. This is all general impression.

The Oregon Pinots really held their own in a heck of a lineup
-Some BDX and Napa thrown in at the end for kicks.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 1989 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Well, when you walk into the a tasting and you get a blind pour of an older burg and it turn out to be a Roumier, you say Thank You! I got the last pour, some sediment may have dulled the nose a bit. But it was one of those wines the more time you spent with it, the deeper it became. But this was a rather subtle elegant wine. Seemingly fully mature to maybe slightly past peak, with complex ethereal fruit, seamless from start to finish. Lacks a little punch and complexity on the finish but the nose really makes up the difference. Great experience
    (Same bottle as JVIZ)

  • 1996 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Tart with rather shrill angular acidity, with some herbaceousness. However, it was quite focused, and the nose really pulled one to the glass. Good, but tough competition today with Roumier among a who’s who of great Oregon Pinot

  • 1996 Daniel Moine-Hudelot Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Showed a bit tired and thin. Acidity is angular but there’s some dried fruit underneath. More interesting than good. Not sure how much is producer and now much is potentially poorly stored bottle.

  • 2013 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Hillside 93 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Solid in the Rhys style. Whole cluster spice notes really soar over the black Pinot fruit. Polished, refined, and a bit more concentrated than the base cuvée. Lengthy finish. Just not sure the whole cluster a herbal notes are in balance here. Maybe with more time?

  • 2013 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Roland Green Vineyard 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Some maturity on the color. Beautifully expressive note with space and herbal notes mixed with some loam and sous-bios. Palate was crisp, is a bit thin and lacking a little fresh. Didn’t quite do it for be as I felt the structure/stem notes where a little out of balance to the fruit.

  • 2014 Alexana Pinot Noir Revana Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Thought this was a nicely done CA Pinot. Ripe, with lush fruit but no sense of heat and really holds itself well.

  • 2017 Edouard Delaunay & Ses Fils Corton 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Thought this was CA Pinot for sure too. Lush, but more depth than many of the Oregon wines. With time, seemed to lack some focus on the nose and palate, and I missed some of the typical burg structure. Still, very enjoyable now. No idea how this will age.

  • 2019 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Not decanted and that may have doomed this. Nose had a harsh burnt rubber note with some rather candied red fruits. Seemed very disjointed. Best to reserve judgment

  • 2018 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir Estate 88 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Gippsland

Very cloudy, with a bright red color. Nose was mostly ripe strawberry and raspberry notes. Very red fruited, a bit candied. Odd juxtaposition with rather bright acidity and short finish. Reminded me of some of the IPOB Pinots from CA that were picked too early and couldn’t fill out the mid palate.

  • 2018 Domaine Nicolas-Jay Pinot Noir Own-Rooted 94 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

This was hard to place initially. Very dark and concentrated—by far the most concentrated of the Oregon Pinots and even with most of the Burgs. WHile it lended itself to dark black cherry and even some currants, with some coaxing has some nice floral notes that lifted the aromatics. Fine tannins. Very wound up powerful Pinot. I’d be very interested in how this is in 5yrs—right now I’m not sure it captures the “soul” of Oregon but willing to seek out some more in the future. Very well crafted even if it’s touch to nail down as “Oregon”

  • 2011 Morlet Family Vineyards Pinot Noir Coteaux Nobles 87 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Super ripe, leaning towards black fruit notes. Past peak though, as the mid palate is drying out with the rather course tannins giving this a bitterness on the finish. Others like this much more than I.

  • 2019 Domaine Capuano-Ferreri Santenay 1er Cru La Comme 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru

Very surprising. With the fleshy ripe dark grained I thought it may be CA. But there’s a nice core of tannins here and with air a little herbal and earthy notes to add a bit of complexity. Nice wine, particularly for the price.

  • 2009 Chartron et Trébuchet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embazées Rouge 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Despite the ripe vintage, this was rather thin fruited and tart. Acidity was a bit angular, but there were some nice herbal spice notes mixed in. I think this would have been nice with food.

Flight 2 (5 Notes)

  • 2018 Dominus Estate 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dang this was impressive right out of the gate. Nuanced elegant herbal notes mixed with deep blank fruit. Fine tannins. Quite polished and seemless. Hard to believe how accessible this is now as well as the degree of complexity for a young wine. Has enough structure that it may shut down at but hard to say. One of the best young Napa wines I’ve ever had.

  • 2019 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndenhurst 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Small pour. Lush, forward, and ripe but quite balanced. Quite delicious with rather soft tannin. Hard not to like now.

  • 2017 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse)

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Just opened. Didn’t show well initially. Had a seemingly reductive note and strong oak influence. Had a deep black fruit streak. Glossy and polished. Just too young and hard to get a good read on.

  • 2013 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Blanc 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Small pour after all the red. THis has been in a decanter the nose was just killer, with peach and citrus notes. Palate quite accessible, with some of the youthful acidity softened—but still fresh and focused. Nice length on the finish

  • 2019 Weingut Keller Riesling von der Fels 93 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

Another white at the end of the tasting after all the reds. Small pour. Delightful. White peach and golden fruit notes with a little petrol and stone mixed in. Really well crafted balanced Riesling.
