Introduction

Did a tasting session with friends who were keen to explore more, wanted to share wines with some age since most people don't get a chance to normally. Glad all the wines showed well on the night.

  • 2007 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Volnay Les Grands Poisots 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

    Old-school earthy Burg that was showing some tertiary development with forest floor notes. Was quite loose at first but came together nicely with air. Not the most complex, but very elegant and pleasurable.

  • 2012 Domaine Joliet Fixin 1er Cru 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin 1er Cru

    Very pale, translucent red in colour. Light red fruit, a little jammy for me without the structure of the Boillot. Others liked the fruit-forward nature of this than I did.

  • 2014 Jean Foillard Fleurie 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

    Another fruit-forward wine but with more depth than the Joliet. Similar impression to the last time I had this, still was surprised that this was darker than his Morgons. Showed more bubble gum and jamminness with air.

    Similar experience to the last time with a completely crumbly cork. Similar impressions too, except that the crowd liked the tertiary, mushroom character of the wine more than the last group.

  • 1982 Château La Louvière 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Was afraid that this might have been corked at first but the mustiness blew off with air. Such a vibrant colour for its age, very alive and regal for an unheralded 1982. Definitely on the downslope but always a treat to have a 1982.

  • 2005 Château Sociando-Mallet Cuvée Jean Gautreau 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Has settled down since the last time I tried this. Still obviously glossy and primary, but the wine is more integrated with the purple, cassis fruit being at the forefront rather than the polished veneer. More optimistic about the wine's trajectory now.

  • 2016 Elio Sandri Barolo Perno 91 Points

    Blinded the others to see if they could tell the difference between Barolo / Brunello. Both were traditional producers so it was a tough call. I have been saying for some time that the difference between the Nebbiolo and Sangiovese is not so much in terms of varietal characteristics but winemaking. Similar impressions to the last time I had this wine, hint of nail varnish on the nose with attractive and fresh red fruit. Very young still.

    Blinded the others to see if they could tell the difference between Barolo / Brunello. Both were traditional producers so it was a tough call. I have been saying for some time that the difference between the Nebbiolo and Sangiovese is not so much in terms of varietal characteristics but winemaking.

    A little coffee on the nose, palate had a little more structure and deeper, dark red fruit than the Sandri. Approachable now with some air.
