Early birthday celebration

Introduction

First half of my birthday celebration where everyone generously brought wines on my wishlist, almost all the wines showed well. The pair of H-Ns were a testament to the magic of Burgundy, but also that it is very much producer-dependent.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2019 Guiborat Fils Champagne Grand Cru tethys.19 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

First experience with this producer and quite impressed. Disgorged March 2022, 1.5g dosage, 73% from 2019 base and the rest from a perpetual reserve, 100% Chardonnay from Chouilly, Cramant and Oiry. Excellent freshness, surprisingly not strict at all. Rich and red-fruited, very tasty for an entry-level. Lost some acidity and structure as the wine warmed up.

  • 2020 I. et S. Bernaudeau Les Coqueries 92 Points

    France, Vin de France

Wow the producer’s quality was immediately apparent. Burgundian-style reductive nose, weighty and full-bodied with some honey notes on the palate. The high acidity made me think Jura, but the slight sweetness should have brought me to Loire. Someone said there was a barley note which I did get on the finish. Thought it was much older than it was so might be better to drink these on the young side - I like Chenins on their younger side for their zest and energy anyway.

  • 2009 Vincent Dancer Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Dominated by the heavy oak use and richness. Once it was revealed to be a Dancer, it was clear that it was from a warm vintage so guessed 2009. Tropical and alcoholic with a thick and viscous texture, unfortunately didn’t have the drive that I loved in the 2015 last year.

  • 1995 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Some loved the intoxicating, perfumed nose but it had more VA and toasty oak than I would have liked. Palate was weightless and ethereal so an easy guess as a Vosne or Chambolle. Thankful to have tried this very generous bring but didn’t wow me on the night despite being very good.

  • 1995 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

More masculine and structured than the Mugnier alongside. Thought this was a CSJ, perfumed and elegant despite the old-school rusticity and dark fruit. Incredibly fresh for its age and still has many years to go.

  • 2008 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Superb lifted nose with five spice notes, easy guess as Vosne. Was between Cathiard or H-N but when it was revealed to be the latter it could only have been a Suchots. Guessed 2010 because of the incredible balance and purity of red fruit. None of the 2008 acidity, possibly because of later picking? Love Burgundies that are so poised and delicate.

  • 2006 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

I was the only one who felt that this bore some similarities to the previous wine. Unfortunately got dissuaded from my original opinion that it was another H-N Vosne 1er but a different plot and vintage. Much more structured and masculine, the dark, brooding red fruit made me guess a more structured vintage like 2012. Surprised that it turned out to be a cool year and older than the Suchots, perhaps an indication that Malconsorts needs more time. Very enjoyable despite being rather tightly coiled.

  • 2013 Domaine Amiot-Servelle Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Very different from my previous experience. A couple of us immediately said this was a Duroche 1er because of the dark cherry and slight cola notes. Fruit was much more vibrant but wasn’t as elegant and light as the previous occasion that I had this.

  • 1982 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Could easily have passed off as a very good right bank Bordeaux. Rich, dark red fruit with some plum notes. Had a little greenness from another era, liked the understated nature of this. Incredibly fresh for a 40 year old wine, just missing a little complexity as it came across as one-dimensional.

  • 2010 Didier Dagueneau Les Jardins de Babylone Moelleux 92 Points

    France, Southwest France, Jurançon

Couldn’t place this since it was very light and elegant for a sweet wine. Mainly apricot and caramel notes, drinking very youthfully. Better with savoury food than sweet.Enjoyable and easy-drinking.
