  • NV Champagne Suenen Champagne Grand Cru C + C Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Oh how I love the nose on this wine. This is pristine, polished, and refined with excellent depth to the tones of red and green apples, pears, biscuits, white fruits, baking spices, limes, toast, acacia flowers, and meyer lemons. The Medium bodied feel is deft and balanced with racy, high acidity that really makes your mouth water. This is just such a lovely Blanc de Blancs and I can't get enough of it. I do wish that it hadn't taken off in price like it has, but such is something that felt inevitable.

  • 2012 Francois Carillon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St. Jean 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

The nose is well balanced and melded with lovely tones of vanilla, pears, red apples, quince, melon, a touch of reduction, custard, yellow flowers, and cream notes. This shows off some good depth with a real seamless quality that shows how well this has aged. The Medium bodied feel is silky and balanced with crisp, medium+ acidity. The acidity is well integrated and there is a deftness to the feel that comes from some age. This feels like it is really in its pomp as this shows off all of the good qualities that you want from an almost 12 year old Premier Cru White Burg.

  • 2012 Buisson-Charles Meursault Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

This took about a half hour to open up. It was really lovely once it opened up with a refined sense to the tones of toast, nutmeg, red apples, bosc pears, quince, vanilla beans, navel oranges, and some marmalade. This had a light gold color and certainly didn't look like it would be hitting year 12 later this year. The Medium bodied feel has a bit of fatness, but with some real good texture along with tart, medium+ acidity. The acidity is mouthwatering and integrated that really provides some backbone. This is just lovely. It's that simple. While this bottle had plenty of life ahead of it, it would also be a shame not to enjoy it now as it's firing on all cylinders.

  • 2001 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

This was a little dried out at first. After about two hours open, it did flesh out and darken somewhat in the glass. The nose is balanced, perfumed, and savory with raspberries, sour red cherries, cranberries, leather, dried sour red fruits, earth notes, tobacco leaf, and some violets. The Medium bodied feel is balanced with tart, medium+ acidity and slightly drying, medium tannins. This bottle feels like it is on the downslope, but there is still a lot there to give joy. I may have liked this more on its own, but it paled in comparison to the 06 and 08.

  • 2006 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

The nose has a robust and brawny quality with raspberries, sour red cherries, plums, earth notes, violets, leather, sweet tobacco leaves, licorice, and savory spices. There is good depth and style here with a bit of primary quality that still exists to the fruit. The Medium bodied feel is savory and robust with tart, medium+ acidity and slightly coarse, medium+ tannins. The tannins are still a bit present and rough with it not showing off much resolution. If the tannins are able to resolve, this could see some more upside but I'm not entirely confident of that at this point.

  • 2008 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

The nose shows off more primary qualities than the previous two (understandably) but with the same level of savoriness to the tones of cranberries, raspberries, sour red cherries, roses, violets, brown spices, earth notes, leather, and some savory herbs. The Medium bodied feel is balanced and rounded with tart, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. This is drinking beautifully and with just a bit of extra style as well as excellent depth across the nose and palate.

  • 2019 Domaine Castagnier Vosne-Romanée 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

The nose is fresh and lifted with elegant tones of red cherries, raspberries, violets, sour plums, fresh herbs, savory notes, wild flowers, and some spice notes. The Medium bodied feel is silky and fresh with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium tannins. This will certainly benefit from age as it's clearly a young wine. But, I really like where the depth and aromatics are at already for the level as this also shows off a real attractive quality.

  • 2014 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

At first, this was a bit coiled up and tough to get a handle on. After about two hours of air, it really came into itself as there is still a lot of primary qualities to the tones of raspberries, sour red cherries, dark red fruits, licorice, violets, fresh herbs, and tobacco notes. The Medium bodied feel has a brawny quality that is more broad shouldered than brutish. The Medium+ acidity is crisp and mouthwatering while the Medium+ tannins still have a bit of chewiness to them. This could still benefit from another few years of aging. This isn't an old school Chevillon and I really dig it for that. But, it still retains some of the sternness of the house.
