Another fun evening at Jim's. As usual as the evening went on we would make the trip down to the cellar to open some more wine. Always a good time. Thanks Jim.
Nose: Candied lemons and stone mineral. Palate: The candied lemons show with light to medium acid levels and a decent finish. Somewhat simple but not bad for a village bottling. Drink up.
Nose: Big earth aromas similar to a Quilceda Creek. Palate: Earth and some dark fruits underneath. Day 2 ~ More fruit evident but less complex than day 1.
Nose: Loamy with red clay aromas. Palate: Good acidity initially that fell off with time. Red fruits showing but Jim nailed it when he referred to it as muddled. Good descriptor. Jury is out on the evolution path on this one.
Nose: Big leather and creosote aromas. After aeration more floral notes were added. Palate: Big earth with licorice, black fruits and spice. Lengthy finish. Great QPR for $30/bottle. My WOTN.
Next stop....QPR City. This wine was a shocker in terms of value. Nose: A little more vanilla than the Old Lakeville and similar creosote and leather aromas, but more subdued. Good acidity and black fruits in equal measure. Day 2 ~ Nose: Spice and wet cement. Palate: Firm tannins and black fruits. Still very solid. 90 points in an absolute sense but 91 given the extraordinary QPR.
Nose: Tar and scorched earth with sage and underbrush. Very rustic. Palate: Earthy with black fruits. Very evolved already. Killer QPR. Day 2 ~ Tar and scorched earth aromas muted but still present. Palate: Softened tannins and less earth and more fruit evident.
Nose: Earthy with red fruits. Palate: Earthy with spice and dark fruits. Day 2 ~ Similar to day 1 but the spice shows more and there is a unique floral and glue-like aroma. Still very firm tannins. Nice Priorat but the Mas Mallola edges this out due to how well it drinks now and higher QPR.
This was one of Jim's mad scientist moments as he was wanting to check in on this one. Nose: Mushrooms and some cedar with damp cellar aromas. Palate: Red fruits and mushrooms. Surprisingly youthful color with very little browning. I prefer much more youth in my wines but this has held up well given its amazing age. Cool to try a Cab this old.
