Flight 1 (6 Notes)

The early birds arrived Thursday for a couple of dinners on Friday and Saturday featuring the Four M's - Musigny, Mouline, Montrachet, and clos du Mesnil. We started lightly, but hey, its Thursday.

  • 1975 de Castellane Champagne Cuvée Commodore

    France, Champagne

    (10/7/2010)

The kick-off wine for a great weekend in the mountains. The theme for Friday and Saturday's dinners is Four M's - Musigny, Mouline, Montrachet, and clos du Mesnil. Lunch and afternoon wines are potluck. The 75 Castellane was gorgeous, aged, lush, vibrant, heck this had it all. Based on this bottle, I'd love to try other vintages. ...I got a feelin'...its going to be a good night(s)...

  • 1979 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Charlie

    France, Champagne

    (10/7/2010)

Extremely fresh, crisp, but a note on the nose that wasn't off, but slightly suspect. Not as good as this wine could or should be, but a fun drink nonetheless.

  • 1993 Joseph Drouhin Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (10/7/2010)

I seem to have a frequent issue with Drouhin - good wine that's short of great. This bottle was in fine shape, and it was a good drink, but for me it lacked the wow factor. And I'll note that the next morning the bottle had about 30% left in it, and actions speak loudest IMHO. I'll keep trying - invites accepted.

  • 1980 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (10/7/2010)

This is a terrific wine, which almost always shows well. Showing great development, while still retaining freshness. A favorite vintage of mine, and a very nice Vogue.

  • 1993 Louis Jadot Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (10/7/2010)

I liked this better than the 93 Drouhin Musigny. Others had a reverse opinion. It was a bit tough on opening, but developed nicely. Flowers, a touch of perfume, very good. A glass left in the bottler overnight was outstanding in the morning.

  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (10/7/2010)

The color here is very dark, and it took some time for the nose to come through. On the palate it stayed reserved all night, and interestingly a glass left in a corked bottle for the morning was also still quite tight. What it did show was great dark fruit, without Leroy flamboyance. No hurry on this wine, lots of development left.

Flight 2 (6 Notes)

Friday Luncheon Wines - the team continues to assemble.

Flight 3 (19 Notes)

Friday Night - one of the two main events. I should add that we have not had a single bad bottle thus far - hurray for provenance. Tonight was killer.

  • 1989 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut Collection

    France, Champagne

    (10/8/2010)

We interrupt our forth coming night of Krug du Mesnil for a pre-dinner 1989 Krug Collection. A decent champagne, but the vintage showed through, and there really wasn't a lot going on here (see note below on 89 Mesnil). The bottle had been through a lot to make it here, so a bit of bottle shock was possible. Good, not great.

  • 1985 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil

    France, Champagne

    (10/8/2010)

This was outstanding, and may become a legendary wine (if its not already). The easy star of the flight (85,89,95) and simply all you want in great early stage Champagne. Wow+.

  • 1989 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil

    France, Champagne

    (10/8/2010)

Decent, but nothing memorable here, given its pedigree.

  • 1995 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil

    France, Champagne

    (10/8/2010)

Young, opulent, and beautiful. Definitely class in a glass here, but if you only have a couple, sit on them. Great today, but far from the wine it will become IMHO.

  • 1982 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    (10/8/2010)

Drank the 82 and 83 side by side. A fabulous pair, and a very nice treat. The 82 went from strength to strength, literally setting new levels every 30 minutes (we had generous pours and let them carry forward through three food courses). The 83 was a touch more flamboyant on the nose and on the palate. The 83 was thicker and richer, but the 82 was more intellectually appealing, and in the end simply better. Both were outstanding.

  • 1966 Maison Leroy Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (10/8/2010)

The party officially started here. This is a nose that simply won't quit. It was at least ten minutes before I wanted to actually break the spell and take a sip. Pretty, sexy, seductive expressiveness, everything you want in a burg. Off the charts, and co-WOTN with the 66 Vogue. Wow!

  • 1966 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (10/8/2010)

Having this wine paired with the 66 Leroy is more than any wine lover could ask for. Unbelievable. Deep dark fruits. Rich, wide, gorgeous palate. Seductive in its presentation. As fruit forward as the Leroy, but deeper and more mysterious. Co-WOTN, and again, a pair that would knock over any burg lovers.

  • 1964 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    (10/8/2010)

The 64 Vogue had the challenging role of being flighted with the 66 Leroy and 66 Vogue. Funk on the nose, but a very nice palate. Hard to judge objectively as the 66's were calling our names, so lets leave it at very good.

  • 1992 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil

    France, Champagne

    (10/8/2010)

Not a lot of acidity, and lacking in focus. Not a rock star, but had a certain appeal if you stretched your mind a bit.

  • 1998 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil

    France, Champagne

    (10/8/2010)

Youthful, full of citrus and acid, with biting intensity. Still young and hard to evaluate. We took the liberty of blending a little 92 and 98, which was a nice blend.

  • 1966 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (10/8/2010)

This was close to perfection (well maybe it was). Lovely soft nose, beautiful palate. Only next to the 69 could this be anything but the best Mouline I've ever drunk. Stunning.

  • 1967 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (10/8/2010)

Soft, light, sexy. Not the heavy weight the 66 and 69 were, but held its own and was very good to great.

  • 1969 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (10/8/2010)

Money. Words are inadequate to describe how good this was. Elegant, rich, opulent. Again, words aren't adequate. The 66 and 69 pairing is the best Rhone experience I've ever had.

  • 1971 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (10/8/2010)

My notes and memory faded a bit here, so I'll leave others to chime in on the 71 and 76. Both were great, but I was still enamored by the sixties, and didn't give these the attention they no doubt deserved.

  • 1958 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Speciale

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    (10/8/2010)

The first fireplace wine tonight. Like prior bottles from this parcel, a perfect bottle. Rich dark fruit, and drinking beautifully.
