Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2007 Franz Hirtzberger Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Rotes Tor 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

First try of the '07 (had a half case of the '05). This was similar, but crisper and lighter on its feet. Expressive nose of apples, pears, flowers and an strong ribbon of mineral/stones that prickles a bit (bubbles?). Palate has light fruit with a small dose of citrus emerging and crisp acidity that finishes in great balance. Very appealing.

  • 1995 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale Cabassaou 94 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

Decanted 4 hours. Red with a tinge of violet. Nose of dark berries, earth, spice, mineral, 'bramble', smoky meat. Edgy palate that is driven by both mineral and dark, complex fruit. Still with plenty of tannin and great, palate dancing, acidity. Great sense of complexity and has nice finesse despite the almost brooding fruit. Less hard edged than in 2006. serve now or hold for a long time. Served with wild mushroom risotto to good effect.

  • 1991 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Decanted 3 hours. Deep violet with bare red tinge. Nose of dark berries, earth, graphite. Fruit is deep and dark and penetrates well. Tannins well integrated, but present as is a refreshing acidity. Not much sense of complexity beyond dark fruit and some pepper. Good sense of balance. Enhanced experience with Wagyu ribeyes -- Patrick was exhilarated.

  • 1991 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Decanted 3 hours. Dark red (no violet or brown). Nose of blue, black and red berries, spice, cedar, tar, tobacco, earth. Palate featured lifted fruit with a round texture. Integrated tannins and just right acidity. Layered fruit with moderate sense of complexity. Some finesse, not a plodding cali cab at all. Good length. Wonderful with Wagyu ribeyes - almost a 'genius' match.

  • 1986 Château d'Arche Sauternes 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Almost carmel-colored now. Carmel, pear, apricot, vanilla on nose. Light, not cloying sweetness which is good because there is not much acidity. The balance therefore is good. Low complexity and not much finesse. Very serviceable served with berry cream white cake.
