nose: apple pie. With lemon, bit of dust....really nice and complex nose palate: a bit bitter and dessicated-tasting at first, with mineral finish. After it warmed a bit in the glass, more fruit became evident, with accompanying body and the dessication subsided. Still sour at the end, but I could see this going really well with food. OK for me but for $36, I prefer champagne. Also, 13% alcohol (from the ripe vintage) - while that offers a bit of power to the palate, it's not my cup o' bubbly.
based on 2007 vintage nose: herbal, sawdust, licorice palate: body is lighter than I like (Terry called it "ethereal" - I call it "lacking") with a watery midpalate. Give me Bollinger pinot noir from the Ay for a few more shekels and a lot more presence.
2nd disgorgement of this wine nose: raspberry, but very shy nose palate: dry, almost tannic, but the fruit behind it is practically candy-like. Not sweet in any way, the wine coats the tongue evenly and precisely, like a slate and berry bath. Fairly amazing Rose. Can't wait to see how this ages.
nose: so very forward, with pine-sol, pineapple, and super-fruit on steriods, almost palate: zero sugar, so unexpected after the bodacious nose. almost purely mineral tasting. Really interesting, I kept swirling, sniffing and drinking until it disappeared. Long finish. and only 11% alc. I can't wait to revisit this. (terry suggests serving with sour-cream based foods. Sounds good to me!) somewhere between 90-93 points for my palate. This was just plain impressive.
nose: crackers and beeswax - nothing like I expected from a gruner palate: gruner palate, though. Very grapefuity, and fat to start, it became linear at the tail end of the palate. Finished with lime peel. Not bad, but didn't wow me (though the nose was interesting).
nose: herbal, mineral, cinnamon at times (Terry indicated it was "the peppery GV") palate: green. Just like a gruner, but to me, not adding much to it. I wasn't wowed, though it was uniquely typical - if ever someone wonders what benchmark GV offers, I'd hand them this.
nose: biscuity, smoky fruit palate: stony fruit with sour metal. Flowery and zingy, this was almost too loud for my palate. But I can see the appeal to others' tastes.
initially, I found this to be more muddied and haphazard in texture and presence compared to the Willi Shaefer poured before it. Hwoever, it developed a lovely milk chocolate-y flavor over time, which I found delicious and intriguing. Worth a re-try, for sure.
