Introduction

This was a very enjoyable evening with some fantastics wines. The CDP's were all quite good with some absolutely stellar wines. Excellent food and lively conversation!

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • NV Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Nose shows berries, mineral, apple. The palate is consistent, light, crisp acidity, nice clean finish. Not exceedingly complex, but what it does, it does well. Very nice N/V.

  • 2001 Mumm Napa DVX 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Light gold color. Nose is bready, yeast, nutty-almonds, minerality, citrus, hint of pear. Palate is toasty with good acidty, rich mouth feel, lots of minerality, citrus/lemon, long finish. Nice balance and complexity. Vastly different from the Ployez and my preference for its complexity. 91+pts.

Flight 2 (7 Notes)

  • 1992 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Medium dark red, very slight bricking. Nose is wonderfully aromatic, prominent floral notes, herb de provence, evolving to damp earth, light sweet red fruit, leather, caramel. Palate is medium bodied, tart acidity, tart cherry, herbs and spice, still some tannin. Multi-layered on the nose and palate. Medium plus finish. This bottle showed wonderfully and did hold up for a couple hours. After that it was fading modestly. My WOTN.

  • 1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Nose has sweet herbs, garrigue, dark red fruits, spice. Palate shows good balance, moderate acid, fruit still showing nicely, spices, velvety mouth feel. Long finish. Not showing all the nuances of the Bonneau, but in some ways has better overall balance right now.

  • 2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Herbal, floral, mineral, garrigue nose. the palate has good body, tannins are firm, fruit is lurking, but not showing, spicy. Medium finish. Nice, but appears that this still needs some additional time. I have not had one yet that rocked, but I'm still hoping.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. aerated and 1 hour decant. Loved this nose: gorgeous, perfumed, lavendar, herb de provence, dark fruits. Palate has nice depth, good acidity and well integrated tannins, black fruit, spices, nice finish. I thought this really showed well and has even more potential with additional time. Probably my #2 WOTN, tough call as was neck and neck with the '98 Clos des Pape. 93+pts.

  • 2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Nose is floral, dark fruits, herbs. palate is rich dark fruits, concentrated, spice, good acid, mild tannins. Very good, but quite primary right now. This did not show as well as previous bottles, so may be in a shut down phase.

  • 2007 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Surprisingly open right now. Nose shows kirsch, red fruits, lots of fruit, smokey. The palate is concentrated and shows good balance. Loved this right now, can't wait to see where this goes. Damn, guess that means i'll have to wait...I

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 2005 Bert Simon Serriger Herrenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Deep gold color. Nose initially is strong petrol, some of it blows off, but it retains that quality for quite some time. Eventually evolving to a candied sweet nose of peach, honey, minerals. The palate is sweet, also candied, for me it lacks the acidity to really make this rock, viscous in the mouth. Finish shows a bit of petrol. This got significantly better with time in the glass, and was eventually nice, so maybe it just needs time to come together.

Closing

Thanks to Craig for the 1992 Bonneau des Celestines, what a treat. My WOTN and I believe the group's as well. Thanks to Johnny for hosting as usual. Best wishes to Brian and Ashley as they begin their new adventure! I hope you can make it back to share wine and stories with us before too long.
