Introduction

Another great night of wine and friendship with jar1, TWG, and the spouses. I love the passion for the grape that they share so freely.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • NV Taittinger Champagne Brut Réserve / La Française 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Nice nose of toast, biscuit dough, citrus, white flower. On the palate, citrus, toast, green apple. Finishes nice, but this champers left me wanting something else.

  • 2006 Vylyan Villányi Mandolás Vylyan Vineyards 92 Points

    Hungary, Dél-Pannónia, Villányi

Popped and poured, could have used a decant. Opened up after about 1/2 in the glass. Great classic Cab Franc nose of sour cherry, bell pepper, tobacco, vanilla, some spicy oak. On the palate, big time fruit with red currant with overtones of bell pepper and tobacco, some blackberry peeks through with the vanilla flavor. Finishes very nice with smooth but sturdy tannins and a nice blast of acidity. Rare treat to get a wine from Hungary. Thank you TWG. Might have been my WOTN had it not been for the Rioja.

  • 1995 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904 93 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Popped and poured, translucent brick color in the glass. Nose of orange peel, red fruit, spice dill,,hints of leather,. On the plate, blast of cherry, baking spices, leather, dill, candied plum. Finishes with nice aicidty and completely resolved tannins. Drink over what ever time period you choose. This has a good 20 years left. A nice reminder of a time when finesse was more important than power. WOTN for me.

  • 2002 Kenwood Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Popped and poured. Nice classic Sonoma County nose of red currant, bell pepper, tobacco, mocha, vanilla. On the palate, red currant, bell pepper, tobacco, vanilla. Finishes with gritty but sweet tannins and mild acidity. Drink them now if you have these, they are ready to start rolling downhill (at least this bottle was)

  • 2002 Robert Keenan Winery Mernet Reserve

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Popped and poured, this needed a lot more time and air than we gave it. Tight nose of cherry, plum, mocha, spice, vanilla. On the palate, black fruits, mocha, vanilla. Finishes with strudy tannins. Not scored but this does have the structure to go a long way. I would love this wine with a long decant or five more years in the bottle.

  • 2003 Yalumba Shiraz The Octavius 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Popped and poured, needed a decant. Big nose of black fruit, leather, black pepper, licorice, vanilla. On the palate, black fruit, leather, pepper, anise, vanilla. Finishes with sturdy sweet tannins and a nice acidic lift. This has a bright future, it could use another ten years in the bottle before I would try another.

  • 2008 Dacalier De La Terre 88 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Lake County

This is starting to settle in, the burnt rubber aroma has been repaced with smoked meat, the red fruit and floral elements are still there. On the palate, tart red fruit, smoke, spice. Finishes very clean with nice acidity. This was the most food friendly of the wines but it was lost with all of the big bruisers served along side. Drink over the next 10 years.

  • 2005 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Infanticide. Nice classic CdP funk on the nose with black fruits, leather, beef blood, smoke, and roasted meats. On the palate, black fruit, smoke, leather, smoked meats, anise. Finishes with great acidity and mouth puckering tannins. Nice match with lamb. Hold this for another 3-5 years before popping another.

  • 2005 Château Suduiraut 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Popped and poured. Right away, big nose of apricot, dried pineapple, spice, honey, hint of grassiness. On the palate, apricot, pineapple, honey, spice, herbal component (lemongrass?). Finishes with nicely balacing acidity. Perfect match for creme brulee. Like other 2005s I have had, these seem to be built for the longer term. I like this better than the 03 but it is nowhere near the 01.
