Introduction

A wonderful evening with Doug Shafer. Doug offered up his excellent line of wines and neverending jokes. Shafer truly is a winery that is constantly seeking quality in every minute detail of production. Wonderful event and superb wines.

Flight 1 - Shafer Wines (5 Notes)

  • 2008 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 92 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Nose: Intense flavors of bright tropical fruit, almonds, nut. Full bodied, with lean fruit and balancing acidity. Plenty of alcohol. Lush mouthfeel. Long finish. Beautifully balanced.

  • 2007 Shafer Merlot 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Soft nose of red fruit, plum, violets, some very light mint and plenty of coffee and mocha. Suave tannins, but very young and full of life. Some pleasant greeness and cofee on the back end. Complex and very suave. Approachable now or put away for a few years, depending on your preference. Excellent but does not have the intense concentration of fruit like the rest of Shafer's wines.

  • 2007 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Ripe concentrated cherry and currant fruit on the nose, that needs some prodding to fully come out. But the concentration is all there. Some vanilla and suave oak flavors. Very young. Strong but fine tannins. Lush, thick mouthfeel. Save this bottle until that dense fruit decides to really come out of its shell.

  • 2006 Shafer Relentless 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

What can I say about this bottle? Certainly not enough. It truly is a haunting wine. Lots of beautiful smoke and spice, and refined blackberry. The 20% petite sirah brings a nice soft spice and blueberry quality. Plenty of oak. Sauve and full on the palate. The Shafer imprint of intense fruit is certainly present here. This could last for a long time, but is certainly approachable now. It is like a beautiful Northern Rhone with a twist. Gorgeous wine. I might be undercutting the wine by a point or two. I would think that this could go with several fine dishes, from rich stew to a seasoned cut of lamb or beef.

  • 2006 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 97 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Explosion of aromas on the nose, from spice to dark red and blackcurrant fruits. Deep dark violet and perfume. Tongue coating finish that lasts for well over a minute. Very viscous on the palate. A behemoth of a wine. Powerfult but elegant tannins. The flavors are intertwined. Deep, intense concentration of refined fruit. The wine is in its infancy, and yet, it is still an incredibly pleasing glass.
