well - this was my first chance to try a decent amount of '05s...and the cat is out of the bag..so far the hype has been right. they have the fruit that '01 and '03 had but they are not overly tropical and not heavy at all. the acidity is amazing and so is the balance.... oh boy - there goes the budget. pardon the brevity of the notes but the trade tasting atmosphere is not the best for note-taking :)
highlights - meeting Dr Carl von Schubert - what a great guy (and in appropriate greet suit and tie :))
chatting with Alois Kracher... what a great guy - loves wine and people - reminded me of Leitz
downers: JJ Prum.... the '04 and even the '03 were impossible to taste...we specificly took a break before tasting them and had some food to cleanse the palatte... still i could taste nothing past the sulphur....yes the balance was there...but thats it :( yuck.... oh well just buy it and wait :)
well well.... few more weeks till the Wiest and Thiese tastings.. CANT WAIT!!!!

much better than the Madonna (and double the price)
Round tropical mouthfill, light body, nice finish. again - excellent lower end wine but might be priced a bit high

i preffered the '04 but that may be because its too young. seemed more sweet and thus lacking the minerality a bit. but i wouldnt say no to another glass!

like the other '04s, much leaner wines with lovely acidity and none of the tropical overtones. very powerfull wine that manages to stay light.

2004 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese 91 Points
Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 by David in WA... didnt get 93 but this was a wine that will trully benefit from a bit of age. there is a lot of stuffing here and though the wine is a bit hard to taste at this type of tasting (its more elegant than "in-your-face") it did make me think twice. a BUY if i could find at $20-25

a bit heavy on sulphyr (just bottled) but the lushness and creamyness of fruit is excellent. this is at least an auslese as far as RS though so ...

WOW 25-28 brix (75g of RS) and it tastes perfectly balanced...this is a BUY...Christian threw me off the horse when i said this is BA weight... he was right - in Rheinhau 28.9 is the minimum for BA... but in MSR this would have been a BA! :)

2005 Freiherr Heyl zu Herrnsheim Riesling Red Slate Spätlese Trocken 90 Points
Germany, Rheinhessen
as usual - these are the "weirdest" german wines - or at least the most distinctive. i think this is a wine i can pick out blind. the slate is very pronounced and the finish is very long. a crisp wine that i would LOVE to try in 10 years. just to see what its like - i have an incling that it might just need the time

2005 Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan Pechstein Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

an excellent trocken wine, lovely medium body, long finish, tons of fruit on the nose but the minerality takes over. creamy finish. (again - slight bitterness on the finish as with many dry rieslings - german, alsace, austrian...i really dont love that part of it)
