Introduction

An exciting, amazing tasting of GAJA wines – both from Tuscany and Piedmont. The tasting was conducted by Gaia Gaja, Angelo's daughter, who succeeded to excite the audience ( about 70 people) , both through the superb wines and also through her interesting descriptions of the wines, the winery, the history and the philosophy of GAJA.
In summary - a great evening - one of the best and exciting tastings I have experienced.

Flight 1 - Ca'Marcanda (2 Notes)

Flight 3 - Barbaresco (2 Notes)

GAJA's winery is located in Barbaresco, and naturally identified by his Barbaresco's.
GAJA produces an excellent Barbaresco DOCG, but his flagship wine, the Sory San Lorenzo, is defined Langhe DOC, due to a 5% Barbera added to the Nebbiolo.

  • 2007 Gaja Barbaresco 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Light ruby color with clear shoulders. Very elegant – a mix of flowers and sweetness in the nose- Excellent even though a bit closed. Excellent structure. Fruits and sweetness in the palate. High acidity but very well integrated. This is a superb, refined wine, accessible right now even though it can be cellared for many years (222$).

  • 2006 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì San Lorenzo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Sori San Lorenzo is one of the finest Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. This great wine is defined as Langhe DOC (instead of Barbaresco DOCG), because of the 5% Barbera (from the same vineyard) added to the Nebbiolo.
Light and bright ruby color. The nose was quite similar to the previous wine (Barbaresco '07) – elegant, restrained, flowers, sweetness. Light bodied, very elegant and gentle. Excellent balance, high acidity and long finish (391$).

Flight 4 - Sperss (4 Notes)

The great finale – a mini vertical tasting of Sperss. The Sperss vineyard is located in the small village of Serralunga d'Alba.
Superb wines, defined as Langhe DOC because a small amount of Barbera added to the Nebbiolo. Exciting!

  • 2004 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sperss 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Ruby color, -darker than the "standard" Barolo (because of the 5% Barbera?). This wine has a complex nose with a mix of flowers/ perfume and dark fruits. Medium to full bodied, Acidic and with soft tannins – both of them very well balanced and integrated. Long finish. Excellent! (310$).
