Tasting at winery. Simple, lean fruit with good acidity. Touches of minerality. Nice flavors but not particularly elegant.

  • 2002 Bergström Pinot Gris 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (5/25/2003)

Tasting at winery. Rich fruit on nose, then nice flavors of pear and lemon on palate that follows through nicely through to the finish. Had a nice Alsatian character to it with a nice trace+ of residual sugar.

  • 2002 Bergström Pinot Noir 90 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (5/25/2003)

Barrel tasting at winery. Big blacker fruit show some ripeness. Flavors of plum, black cherry with cocoa and spice traces on finish. Very concentrated. Intended as a wine to drink young, and it succeeded in that goal.

  • 2002 Bergström Pinot Noir Arcus 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (5/25/2003)

Barrel tasting at winery. Strawberry and red cherry on nose, continuing on to the palate. Very seamless. Flavors are concentrated but not overripe. Very long finish shows shows big, meaty spice character, almost in a Gevrey type of way. This wine can last a long time with its good balance of fruit, silky tannins and acid. Very impressive.

  • 2001 Bergström Pinot Noir Cumberland Reserve 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (5/25/2003)

Tasting at winery. Fresh, bright fruit on nose. Plenty of wild strawberry and red cherry come out all the way through. Acidity and tannins are already nicely integrated. Acidity gives nice lift and length.

  • 2000 Bergström Pinot Noir Reserve 85 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (5/25/2003)

Tasting at winery. Nice and pleasant fruit but simple on both nose and palate. At the same time there are too many tannins, making th ewine seem backward. Will this ever come into balance?

  • 2001 Bergström Syrah Paso Robles 79 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

    (5/25/2003)

Tasting at winery. Jammy and alcoholic. My score is generous. Bergstrom should stick with Oregon fruit.

Flight 10 - Archery Summit (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Premier Cuvée 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Tasting at winery open house. Very good floral start with red cherry. Simpler and softer on palate, showing a hint too much new oak. Drink within the next year or two.

  • 2000 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Renegade Ridge Estate 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

    (5/26/2003)

Tasting at winery open house. Very good floral nose shows Pinot Noir nicely as well as the new oak spice. Good red and black cherry on nose and palate. Firm and slightly tannic today, best probably 2005-2008.

  • 2000 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Archery Summit Estate 93 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

    (5/26/2003)

Tasting at winery open house. Lots of great black cherry and sweet baking spice aromas. Long evolving flavors, well complemented and balanced by very good structure. A bit of prominent new oak, this will integrate nicely by 2005 and should drink really well to at least 2011 or 2012.

Flight 11 - Odds and Ends (4 Notes)

  • 2000 Stonecroft Pinot Noir Reserve 82 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (5/25/2003)

Tasting. Overly tannic and overoaked for the vintage. Fruit is well hidden and it's not clear the fundamental raw materials will outlast the wine's structure. If I owned any, I would wait for 2-3 more years to see if it gets interesting .

Moderate red fruit aromas with simple spice. Red cherry and raspberry on palate with fairly assertive acidity. Probably best when young and fresh.

  • 2001 Carlton Cellars Pinot Noir Roads End 90 Points

    USA, Oregon

    (5/25/2003)

Nice strawberry driven nose, with same flavors profile on the palate and follow through. Very clean wine with good, simple spice. Drinking well young, this should do well for a couple of years.
