Introduction

This was just a quick throw together we did. Phil had picked up a bunch of meat from Butcher&Larder in chicago so we figured lets go with some wines that could work with what he got

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Schlossberg 90 Points

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

nose: very tight but balanced nose of apples, mineral tones, peaches, pears and loads of white fruits. Good depth, but the tones are hiding a bit at the moment

taste: medium bodied with medium/high acidity and balanced tones of apples, white fruits, white florals, peaches, pears and a nice mineral base. The acidity is very noticeable right now and while it compliments some food, it needs to balance out more

overall: I decanted this for about an hour or so, maybe it needed more air. It did show to be young at this time and to be a wine that can age for 5-10 years+

  • 2003 Teachworth Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Ridge Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

nose: rich and plush nose filled with dark red fruits, red cherries, red currants, raspberries, some bits of mineral tones and cedar. excellent depth with good style to it

taste: full bodied with silky tannins and very polished tones of dark red fruits, red cherries, red currants and cedar tones. There is a nice and silky quality to it though it is lacking a bit of depth on the palate

overall: this is a quality cab. It seems like it's in its pomp right now and showed very well after about an hour in the decanter. Well balanced with a perfumed quality and doesn't show some of the hard edges that I've come across in other 03 cabs. It is lacking a little bit of depth on both the nose and palate, but is a outstanding wine nonetheless

  • 2006 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

nose: lovely, perfumed, and balanced nose filled with tones of rhubarb, dark red cherries, dark spices, berries and a touch of roses. Well balanced with very good depth and a real stylish quality to it

taste: great medium/full body with medium+ acidity and sexy tones of dark spices, rhubarb, berries, and loads of dark red fruits and dark red cherries. Well balanced with good layering on the palate though the acidity is kicking a bit and the tannins are still noticeable

overall: this still needs a good amount of time. This bottle is showing better than the one from a year ago, but it's still very young.

    sadly it was corked

Closing

Too bad on the corked Cote Rotie. It wasn't badly corked, but it was there and disappointing. On the whole, the wines showed well and presented a nice contrast to each other
