Introduction

It had been a while since my tasting crew got together for some wines, but now that Weygandt Wines is back up and running, we decided to drink some great wine. We had about eight beers thrown in as well, which I didn't take notes on. The beers were amazing, and the wines were great too.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2009 Marie-Pierre Germain Bourgogne Blanc 75 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

the first wine of the night was a bit disappointing. a little pear on the nose. the palate was quite bland and watery.

  • 2005 Les Chais du Vieux Bourg Côtes du Jura BB1 90 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

this chardonnay from the jura was really unique and exciting. it smells terrific: chalk, honey, chammomile and a bit of iodine. the palate is really intense and packed with flavors. meyer lemon and key lime pie flavors are backed up by great acid and minerality with a long finish. not your average chardonnay.

    Italy, Umbria, Spoleto

the nose on this white showed lemons and some honey. the palate is tangy and spritzy with pear, pineapple and lively pear fruit. a bit simple, but still a good white.

  • 2008 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Queen's Road White 88 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

this white rhone blend had an incredible dark honey color in the glass. i love the intensity of aromas on this wine. lots of pineapple, candied pear, apricot and even some lychee. the palate is very oily, and the alcohol does show a decent amount. baked apple flavors along with some cinnamon and white pepper. the nose is just wonderful, but the palate is a bit of a let down.

  • 2000 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia 87 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

i liked this more than the last time i had it. the color is really pretty for a rose, with this strawberry brightness. the nose was full of cranberries, red licorice, and cheese rind. the palate is fresh, and even a bit light. some tannins underline the red apple peel flavor on the finish.

  • 2009 Gérard Marula Touraine Le Haut Midi 88 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine

this blend of pinor noir, gamay, and other red varieties showed quite well. it's definitely a strange wine. dark ruby colored. the nose shows green tobacco, red licorice and candied red apples. a fresh and tangy palate with a gushy mouthfeel and lots of red licorice and candied apple fruit.

  • 2008 Les Chais du Vieux Bourg Pinot Noir Côtes du Jura 91 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

in the glass, this wine is incredibly pale, like the color of underripe strawberries. the nose shows candied apples, mineral springs and some earth. the palate is tangy with lots of cranberry, some leather and tobacco. i love the minerality and subtle tannins of this wine. what a great finish.

  • 2008 Crowley Pinot Noir Entre Nous 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

i wasn't as impressed with this wine as some other people at the tasting. the nose smells really stinky. i remarked that it smelled like someone lit a port-a-potty on fire. the palate is light and fresh with some good cranberry and mushroom flavors. after a while the nose settled down. still a good wine.

  • 2006 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Magari 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

after a night of lighter red wines, the color on this wine appears really dark purple. the nose on this super tuscan is just gorgeous: black cherries, plums and rich vanilla bean. the palate is dense, rich and sexy. the tannins are bold, but silky. great dark berry fruit with chocolate shavings and currants. the finish is very long. this wine is showing really well right now, but i'm sure it will age well for a long time.
