Introduction

A mid-week offline was planned for the WS SFL group to welcome Mareff from NYC, but jburman couldn't make it and set up a Sunday evening dinner that was very enjoyable with great company and wine.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Réserve 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Light bodied, apple and lemon fruit, with plenty of acidity and carbonation. Not much yeastiness, but a well made lighter Champagne.

  • NV Charles Ellner Champagne Grande Réserve Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Full bodied forward apple and pear fruit for Champagne. Some bread dough notes and a hint of sweetness on the mid-palate, but finishes with a nice crispness. Lower in carbonation than most Champagne too. Not a classic style, but one I like.

  • 2004 Domaine Moulin-Tacussel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Soft reserved fruit of cherry, raspberry, and currant with medium acidity with a hint of earth and spice/pepper. A nice food wine that doesn't grab you, but does a nice job of complementing a variety of foods.

  • 1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Some bricking at the rim. Fully resolved tannins, with lively red fruit that had a hint of sweetness on the finish. Typical CdP traits of earth, garrigue, and some spiciness. Wonderful wine that is drinking superbly right now.

  • 1997 Cafaggio Villa Cafaggio San Martino Toscana IGT 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Very dark for a sangiovese of this age and still quite tannic. A powerful wine of medium to full body and dark red fruit that needs quite a bit of decanting. This tasted to me and others like it was a big wine that still needed time. Will let my other bottle rest a few years more.

  • 2006 TOR ROCK Hommage Allan Judge Family Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley

Stood out among the Old World wines it was tasted with due to its ripeness and full body. Though still had a nice balance with very dark fruit of blackberry, plum, and currants with a nice backbone of tannins and acidity. Not over-ripe or extracted, just needs some more time to settle down and allow its components to meld more, which should result in a higher score down the road.
