Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2009 Bogle Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel 86 Points

    USA, California

Dark red color. Nose is quite herbal, with some spice, red fruit, a little oak, some heat. The palate has medium body, tart red fruit, alcohol. Simple, ok.

  • 2009 Michael-David Vineyards Zinfandel 7 Deadly Zins 88 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

Dark red color. I have to admit i liked this better than I expected. Nose had an interersting note of salami (and no I didn't have any with the tasting!) which was kind of cool, meat, bright red fruits, soft and fairly smooth on the palate. Nothing fancy, but will be a crowd pleaser.

  • 2008 Bogle Vineyards Phantom 89 Points

    USA, California

Very dark red color. Some alcohol off the bat, black fruits, blackberry, black cherry. The palate is medium bodied with blackberry, black cherry, lush, some tannins, pepper. This is a pretty solid value.

  • 2009 Ridge Zinfandel East Bench 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Very dark red color. The nose has earth, spices, pepper, black cherry, oak. The palate is a little rough on the edges with tannin and a bit of heat, but shows really nice depth and concentration. Young, very good.

  • 2009 Ridge Geyserville 93 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Very dark red/purple color. The nose is lush with ripe fruit, black cherry, a little smokey. The palate has excellent concentration, elegance, good tannic structure, with pepper and mineral on the finish. Really good, great balance. This is the stuff. Needs some time to evolve.

  • 2009 Ridge Lytton Springs 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Very dark red purple color. The nose is lush here too, ripe blueberry and blackberry, herbal, mineral. The palate shows great structure, very deep, full bodied, firm tannins, cassis, blackberry , mineral, and earth. This is big and young. Looking forward to this in a couple of years.

  • 2009 Robert Biale Zinfandel Black Chicken 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District

Very dark red color. The nose has lovely herbs, sweet blueberry, blackberry, tar, black pepper. The palate has lots of glycerin, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, sweet tannins, and a spicy finish. This was well integrated and drinking really well right now.

Closing

The Ridge Geyserville and Lytton Springs were the most compelling, complex and exciting wines of the group by far, but they will benefit from at least another 2 years. The Biale is in a good place right now and is quite good.
