Introduction

Tasted wines blind, then took them to dinner.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1999 San Felice Vigorello Toscana IGT 89 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Blind tasting:

Slightly bricked on the edges might show an older bottle. Some nice notes of vegetable, green pepper, a little onion, and a bit of spice box. Cedar as well. Smooth, bacony, with smooth vegetal, herbal, and forest notes. Some pine, cedar, and spice as well. And a bit of candy as well.

  • 1998 Château Gloria 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    Blind Tasting:

Spicy green pepper, green pepper, green pepper! Wow! What a nose!! Silky smooth, some tannic astringency, with less concentrated spicy green pepper, onion, forest, cedar, leather, and dustiness. Really pleasant, and powerful wine!

  • 2008 Barnett Vineyards Pinot Noir Viento Valle Anderson Valley 92 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

    Blind tasting:

Astringent, strong, alcoholic on the nose. Candied fruit---sweet cherry, strawberry, cotton candy (a bit), and some yeasty, sweet, and spicy flavor at the middle and end of the palate. The spice at the end really helps balance this wine out.

  • 1998 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Blind Tasting:

Some spicy pomegranate on the nose. Leather, blood, and a bit of cedar and forest as well on the nose. Sour plum, cherry, and blood on the palate, with bacon, stewed and roasted meat, fat, and roasted vegetables as well. Like a cold, nasty, winter day's meal---a hearty stew on a nasty day. Lovely wine!

  • 1990 Château La Tour de By 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

    Blind Tasting:

Bacon, blood, fat, green pepper, spice box, and cedar on the nose for sure! White pepper as well. Lots of concentrated tastes similar to the smells above. Great concentration! Really showing perfectly right now. Had a bottle almost a year ago, and wine wasn't quite there. Now it's just phenominal. If you have any, drink it now! What a great experience, with a wine that punches FAR above its weight class! Was surprised, and excited by this wine for sure!

Closing

Enjoyable night with 5 wines that were all pretty different, and very interesting. The '90 La Tour de By was the WOTN, and a great surprise for everyone involved!
