  • Académie des Cinquante Claret Tasting (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL): From a 450cl bottle. It deserves respect for its age and its bottle size, but the reaility of the wine in this bottle was that it was old and earthy.

  • I opened this bottle at today's games night with my team. No formal notes. The wine threw some sediment and offered leather and spice notes as well as cedar and tobacco on the nose and palate, with lively acidity, mostly resolved tannin and good length. A very good, medium-bodied, smooth and well-balanced Médoc with average concentration and complexity. The wine has aged very well and outperformed against its classification. Everybody liked it.

I drank the remaining wine four days later and the wine was smooth and perfectly integrated, and equally enjoyable if not even better. Lovely combination of red fruit, cedar, tobacco, spices, marzipan and balsamic notes. Another very good bottle!

  • Starter Red Flight @ Home: Good bottle with base neck fill and brick red in the glass, but surprisingly darker than the Musar despite being a solid decade older. Chalk it up to storage conditions.

Nose is very good mature Bordeaux, lots of smoke, tobacco, leather, and dry spices. Maybe the vaguest hint of dried apricot or fruit at the tail end, but otherwise nothing. Probably a solid 93 points at this stage.

On entry it seems promising at first, but rapidly tails off into dry acid and harsh tannins in the middle. Finish is jumbled and not particularly engaging. Really a letdown after such a good nose, this is in decline right now. Only give this an 85 at most.

That said, I suspect this is a poor showing in the tasting and would go much better with food, which is generally a theme of wines I'm fond of. The price is also right at $20 a bottle and I suspect it would be unfair to hope for a sleeper hit at that price point.

  • Barbecue with friends at our house. The start of our Bordeaux night. The wine was medium garnet in color. Some initial barnyard funk blew off quickly, revealing a lovely, mature Bordeaux nose of complex spice aromas and leather notes. Still good fruit, cherry-driven. Medium body and concentration. Only average length and without the depth and complexity of the classified growths, but smooth, balanced and very satisfying after some aeration. My guests and I all liked it. Would buy again.
