Introduction

Another great Super Bowl party with great wine and a great football game.

Flight 1 (20 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Starts with some tropical fruit aromas along with baking spice and plenty of new oak. Similar lush ripe fruit to start on the palate, but then making a nice subtle transtion to lighter citrus near the finish, also with good baking spice flavors. New oak frame still prominent after almost a decade, so might be a bit heavy handed.

  • 2007 Domaine Pinson Frères Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Very lean lemon aromas followed by similar lemon flavors on the palate, which come across as rather simple, which lets a bit of new oak protrude today. The good acidity and minerality make this very precise and fairly classically Chablis. Probably best in the next few years given the simplicity of fruit today.

  • 2006 Bruno Giacosa Roero Arneis 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

Floral start with aromas of apple and pear. Slightly simple and sweet orchard fruit flavors with a slight yeasty character with a bit of citrus zest coming through on finish.
    I didn't fully enjoy the wine's textures.

  • 1998 Maison Leroy Savigny-lès-Beaune 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Slightly floral nose with lots of fresh red fruit. Elegant and more restrained red and black cherry flavors on palate with modest spice and very good overall balance.

  • 2007 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes - Coeur de Roy 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Black and red cherry aromas, surprisingly powerful for the 2007 vintage (as well as ripe). Same sweet fruit comes through on palate with moderate spice and fairly assertive tannic edge on finish. Wish I had decanted. Give this a few more years in the cellar.

  • 2008 Domaine Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Excellent start aromatically with great floral character combined with red and black cherry, licorice and nutmeg. Palate starts with similar quite ripe fruit but quickly simplifies in the middle, with some spice re-emerging on finish.

  • 1999 Kistler Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 82 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Mature over-ripe black fruit on nose and palate. I found it also somewhat stewed but doubt there was heat damage since this was bought from the winery at release.

  • 2008 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Aromas of black cherry and boysenberry. Same black fruit on palate with some nicely alluring spice and also some trace telltale "RRV" cherry cola. I keep wanting not to enjoy Kosta Browne wines, but find them so well made in their style that it's tough not to enjoy.

  • 2002 Torbreck The Factor 90 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Ultra rip black fruit with lots of spice on the nose. Same incredibly ripe blackberry and black cherry flavors on palate, but they were able to stay just short of being jammy. Acid level is low and tannins are well integrated, so I think this wine is at a fairly good place now that the fruit has softened a bit, before it starts to fade and allow the alcohol to be even more prominent. I enjoyed this far more than I expected.

  • 2009 Linne Calodo Rising Tides 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Jammy red fruit on nose with some baking spice. Sweet, rich and ripe, close to bordering on over-ripe, with less spice coming through on the palate.

  • 2009 K Vintners El Jefe En Chamberlin Vineyard 89 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

Black fruit aromas come across as elegant but somewhat simple with a whiff of tobacco. Black cherry flavors with some earthy flavors and textures. Good acidity gives some energy. I didn't realize when I was tasting this wine that it's mostly Tempranillo, but that helps explain its length, balance and relative finesse.

  • 2000 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Moderate red cherry aromas balance with emerging earthiness with some background spice. Same red fruit on palate with moderate spice and good density but the fruit is starting to move into the background and the wine is now fully mature.

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Black cherry aromas with chocolate, ginger, allspice and dried herbs. Same black cherry flavors on the palate with great power and density. Lots of acidity and minerality with good, subtle tannins. Structure is especially impressive for a 2003. This will still get better with more time in the cellar.

  • 2000 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Ripe red and black cherry aromas with a good floral component. Mostly red cherry flavors balanced well with acidity and tannins. Long and elegant finish, even if not particularly powerful. At its peak right now.

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Domaine Louis Jadot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Popped and poured, which was probably not best for this particular wine. Ripe black cherry aromas and flavors with moderate spice. Fairly simple from middle to finish, but i think this just needed more air or more time in the cellar. Least interesting showing by far of the 4 or 5 times I've tasted this wine, probably just 89 point tonight.

  • 2006 Saxum Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

From magnum. No subtlety here. Black fruit with perfumed aromas. Same blackberry and black cherry flavors with modest spice, but already starting to show some maturity to me. The style is not exactly my preferred style for a Syrah blend, and I think the alcohol is starting to become more pronounced. Probably better a year ago.

  • 2005 Colgin Cariad 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Black cherry and boysenberry aromas with spring flowers, anise and chocolate. Fruit on palate is a little more black, with great concentration, power and intensity. A bit "blockbuster" in style for Colgin, but fruit, spice and excellent structure are in such great harmony that the alcohol (15.5%?) doesn't stand out. Still a baby.

  • 2006 Aubert Lucia Abreu Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Black fruit on nose with some new oak spice. Black plum and black cherry flavors, also showing prominent new oak. soft, rounded textures, this a good, forward Bordeaux blend from Napa to drink young. Not a particularly good value wine if I recall the release price correctly.

  • 1999 Gemstone G 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

From magnum. Aromatic nose with black plum and cassis along with some cigar and anise. Same very good sweet fruit on palate, not showing lots of spice, then finishing a bit simple.

  • 2000 Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut Rosé Cuvée Palmes d'Or 88 Points

    France, Champagne

Very Pinot Noir aromas, with berry and strawberry and a faint floral component in background. Similar fruit on palate with mostly lean fruit, then fairly assertive acidity taking control from the middle to finish. Not a particularly good value, even with the impressive looking bottle.
