Introduction

The theme was syrah/shiraz from around the world. Washington, California, Australia, and Northern Rhone were represented.

Flight 1 - Event Wines (7 Notes)

  • 2001 Betz Family Syrah La Serenne 91 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Very dark red/purple color. Pop and pour, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. This has a really nice nose with damp earth in the forefront, blackberry liqueur, plum, pepper, scorched earth, spice. The palate has nice depth, elegance and balance, blackberry liqueur, plum, pepper, licorice, scorched earth, oak and spice. This is very old world in style. This did fall off in the glass after an hour, so I would suggest drinking these up. 91pts.

  • 2008 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah Cofermented Hudson Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Very dark red/purple color. Drank 1 glass over 2+ hours. 5% Viognier, cofermented. Amazing aromatic nose, starts off in funk city and mostly resolves to a musky earth with meat and mushrooms, blackberry, black raspberry, florals, vanilla, smoky, road tar, menthol, black pepper. The palate is very concentrated, deep black berry fruits, tar, pepper, roast meats, nice blance, integrated tannin, long finish. Dead ringer for Northern Rhone. Outstanding and getting better through the night. 93+pts.

  • 2009 Drew Family Cellars Syrah Valenti Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino Ridge

Very dark red/purple color. Drank 1 glass over 1 hour. Nose has bright fruits, blueberry and raspberry, eucalyptus, herbal, orange peel, pepper, cherry. The palate shows consistent fruit, prominent acid, medium full body, more elegant style, very herbal, spice. This shows a little too much eucalyptus/herbal quality for my taste.

  • 2005 Mitolo Shiraz Reiver 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Dark purple color. One hour decant and vinturied once. Drank 1 glass over 2+ hrs. Great nose very aromatic with black fruits of blackberry and currant, cracked black pepper, earth, petrol. The palate is dense and opulent, layers of black fruits, velvety in the mouth, glycerin, graphite, mineral. pepper, very long finish. This is rich and round, yet elegant and flows across the palate with beautiful balance. 93+pts, WOTN for me and tied for group WOTN.

  • 2002 Gibson Shiraz Barossa Vale 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Very dark red/purple color. Pop and pour. Drank 1 glass over 1.5 hours. Nose is very floral, cedar, oak, pepper, eucalyptus, cassis, mineral. This improves significantly in the glass over an hour, blackberry liqueur, black cherry, spice, eucalyptus, marked pepper on the finish. this showed a bit of heat and a little too much acid initially, but that resolved. This ended up being my and group #3 WOTN.

  • 2003 Domaine Duclaux Côte-Rôtie 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very dark red/purple color, very murky. Drank 1 glass over 1hr. Nose is meaty, bacon, crushed stone, funk, earth, subdued black bruits. The palate is funky, barnyard, blackberry, prominent acid, some heat, mid palate seems a bit thin, medium body overall. The balance seems off here.
