Introduction

Phil was the spearhead on this as Shane Finley gave him a heads up that he was coming into town. Naturally we had a few of shane's wines, but I wasn't as on top of my notes as I normally am. Shane wanted to drink some Cote Rotie and it wasn't all too hard to convince another 7 of us to do the same

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2007 Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Condrieu 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

nose: very aromatic with fatter tones of peaches, pears, white fruits, oils and citrus tones. Very good depth, though slightly tight but very balanced as well

taste: full bodied with a nice and fat feel. Balanced with lower acidity and plush tones of oils, white peaches, pears and a good dose of citrus tones as well. There is some nice layering and good depth

overall: This was a pure pop n pour and wasn't that chilled. It was a lovely wine with really good aromatics and a classic feel.

  • 1983 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: wonderful layering strikes you right off the bat in a way that only a mature wine can be. Balanced with aromatic and savory tones of black olives, black fruits, black cherries, dark florals, pepper and some spice tones. Really good depth and elegant and doesn't seem as old as it is

taste: medium/full bodied and very silky on the palate. Good medium acidity is still there with balanced and layered tones of black olives, spice tones, tapenade, black fruits and a bit of pepper

overall: this was the first wine of the night and a great way to kick it off. This ended up being drunk by the whole group before we could find out if it would fall apart or not. It was straight pop n pour and took just a slight bit to really open up. A lovely wine

  • 1985 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: a bit reticent at first, this needed some air to really strut it's stuff. This was the definition of poise and class along with loads of depth. The kind of nose that you can get lost in with gorgeous tones of black cherries, spice tones, loads of pepper, bacon fat and dark floral tones

taste: there is still some tannin present, but it's more there for support. Medium/full bodied with a real lovely and classy feel along with medium acidity. Very layered in ways that can only come with age along with sumptuous tones of black cherries, spice tones, pepper and bits of incense and florals on the back end

overall: This was like a symphony in perfect harmony. It needed some air and had a nice medium ruby color that did show age. This jamet was everything you'd want from them as it had a refined nature while showing a real pretty side too. Thankfully this bottle was singing and was easily my WOTN

  • 1995 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: this was given some air, but it was a bit shy at first and as it unwound it revealed gorgeous tones of red fruits, spice tones, black pepper, bacon fat and a good dose of black cherry. Excellent depth with a real style to it

taste: Full bodied with real good supporting tannins and medium acidity. Balanced with real nice depth and tones of smoke, bacon fat, black fruits, black pepper and some bits of white pepper

overall: This still has a long way to go. Well balanced with a slight bit of browning at the rim, this comes off as drinking but on the young side. This has room for improvement and has the ability to really be special

  • 1996 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: wonderfully savory nose filled with tones of bacon fat, black cherries, olives, tapenade, loads of black pepper and some dark floral tones as well. Wonderful depth and alive with classic cote rotie tones

taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and good tannins. Well balanced with real good layering and polished tones of bacon fat, black cherries, olives, black pepper and some bits of incense

overall: This is a much better bottle than the one I had a few years ago. This was drinking wonderfully with a nice medium red color right now. This is exactly the kind of bottle I would've loved a few years ago and thankfully this was great.

  • 1997 M. Chapoutier Hermitage La Sizeranne 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

nose: quite different from the cote rotie's with a more meaty take to the tones along with bacon fat, charcoal, black fruits, and some earth tones as well. There was a nice savory quality with a rougher edge to it than the cote rotie's

taste: full bodied with good supporting tannins. Balanced but lacking a slight bit of depth and savory tones of roasted meats, black fruits, charcoal, olives and some earth tones

overall: This was a nice change of pace from the cote roties. Had a nice dark ruby color with some browning at the rim. This was just a straight pop n pour

  • 2003 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: very different from the older wines (as expected). Still, with a very savory and balanced nose filled with more upfront tones of red fruits, bacon fat, smoke, charcoal, and a lot of red cherries with some raspberries as well.

Taste: medium/full bodied with some very noticeable tannins. Well balanced with a real sense of class along with medium acidity. Excellent depth as well with nice tart, yet savory, tones of red fruits, red cherries, raspberries and bacon fat with a touch of smoke

overall: This had been decanted for 2 1/2 hours before going to the restaurant. This certainly showed the class of jamet that can be expected while also showing it's vintage as well. The company showed it's qualities further and it would also be interesting to compare this within an 03 tasting

  • 2006 Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Côte-Rôtie La Barbarine 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: extremely deep, but tight, nose filled with tones of smoke, dark red fruits, bacon fat, and black fruits. Wonderfully balanced and aromatic

taste: full bodied with gripping tannins. Medium acidity backs this up as well along with tones of dark red fruits, black fruits, smoke, bacon fat, black cherries and some spice tones as well

overall: this is very young, but it has some real potential hiding underneath. About 8 years would do it wonders and it has marathon structure. I hope to revisit this at a point in the future

Closing

An absolute blast of a night. The staff at the Bristol was completely top notch and they helped make a real good night great. There were more wines than I took notes on. I was a bit more focused on the drinking this time and I didn't have my normal note pad on me
