Keith's birthday usually brings out the big guns and this year it was decided to drink the wines of Bruno Giacosa. It was my first opportunity to try these wines and I walked away impressed. At times I struggled differentiating some of these wines a part from one another, and it seemed like most were drank too young - that being said, it was clear they were wines of class and elegance.

Nothing special, but solid. Good orchard fruit, and energy. Wasn't incredibly deep or nuanced.

2004 André-Michel Brégeon Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Gorges 91 Points
France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine
Tonight was another lesson in the proper serving temperature. The first sips were from a chilled bottle and the aromas were essentially non existant. With time, and warmth, the wine really blossomed into the stunning muscadet we all know it is. Great tones of lemon, pear, seashell, herbs and minerals. This is a powerful muscadet with weighty lemon and pear on the palate. Just a lovely muscadet with depth and precision.

2001 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 90 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Nice cherry fruit on the nose with oak. While the oak was strong, I thought the integration of its flavors was nice. The palate had weight but a nice clarity to it. Good floral notes, subtle tar and good red fruit. Really good stuff.

Nice notes of tar and dark fruit. Seemed to have nice layered fruit and good complexity. Thought this was drinking VERY well.

2001 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Yummy stuff that's about 20 years too young. The tannins are so strong at this point that it's hard to enjoy the wonderfully silky fruit that's somewhere underneath. Will be a fun wine down the line to revisit.

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Rabajà 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
As was the case with the other 2000 Giacosa's, this was drinking beautifully. Had silky dried red florals, tar, resolved tannins and nice earthy almost truffle-like tones. With the tannins being so soft, I feel like this is in a great place to consume. Great stuff.

1999 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano 90 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Wasn't as expressive as some of the 2000s we had, but I thought this was just a bit shy. Maybe that's my ignorance with Piedmont wine, but I got the sense this had some serious material that seemed a bit shy. The fruit was serious and structured - it had some nice floral notes on the finish too. Worth revisiting.

2000 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili 94 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Hard to argue with Kevin's review. While the fruit is bright and expressive, it seems to have a lot left in the tank. Unlike many 2000's this doesn't seem like it's cresting over it's qualitative plateau....rather it's just beginning it's ascension. Interestingly, I thought its best attribute was its mid-palate - just loaded with expressive floral, mineral, tar and dark fruit. Lovely wine that is just beginning to round into its own.

1995 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Villero di Castiglione Falletto 92 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Seemed to have a beef broth component to it that I didn't notice on the other Giacosa's we had. Great tar, leather, a dried tobacco with underlying elegant red fruit and floral notes. Great stuff.

1997 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 91 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Nice secondary characteristics of tar, dried floral notes and somewhat of a subtle tobacco note. The palate was structured but elegant and its floral composition combined with really nice red fruit made this a pleasure to drink.

Great stuff as usual. Expressive pineapple, mango, vanilla and mango on the palate. Loved its freshness and acidity....drinking incredibly well on this evening.

1970 Schloss Eltz Riesling Beerenauslese 91 Points
Germany, Rheingau
Dark color, with a beautiful nose of roasted hazelnut, some vanilla and orchard fruit. Nicely sweet, but as is the case with the best BA's it still has nice acidity and energy to the palate. Thanks to Tim for bringing this along!
