Fine and pretty mousse, it dissipates quickly but keeps coming for a long time. Smells much closer to home than the Schramsberg :) I am probably fooling myself but I get the chalky character. Definitely some flinty or saline character. There are limes, lemons, agave, cucumber. Toastiness is not very pronounced, maybe just a little. On the palate, it’s more bitter and with just a slightest tannin. Lemon and lemon zest, kumquat, apple cider. I like this quite a lot. 9/18

Golden color, boozy fruit on the nose. I taste ripe apples and some brioche in the background. Not much acidity or tension; this is simple and savory but not at all flabby. Enjoyable and a great value at the $35 I paid (which is a heavy discount relative to retail). Not my go-to style for champagne but this round, heavy handed style would be a good fit for a party.

Retail $60. 40% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 20% Meunier, 5% Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau. Disgorged July, 2023. Paid $45 at H-E-B. This has long been a favorite of mine not just for the quality but also for the fact that it includes three of the four "other" grapes allowed in Champagne but no one ever uses (the fourth, I believe, is Pinot Blanc). Tart pear with a hint of lemon rind on the nose, along with yeasty croissant and a slight mineral aspect. Whoa. The palate is pretty fantastic with plenty of green pear, Granny Smith apple, a distinct salinity, and an artful acidity. For around forty-five bucks? Yeah, this should be a staple of any champagne stable. 92 Points.
-- popped and poured -- -- tasted non-blind over a couple hours -- -- 30% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir, and 5% mix of Arbanne, Petit Meslier & Fromenteau -- -- dosage: 6 g/L, according to producer's website --
NOSE: light aromatics that reflect the palate.
BODY: rose gold color; medium-light bodied.
TASTE: quite dry, with a relatively airy mouthfeel, but without compromising in the flavor department; medium-light pear and apple mix; a touch vinous; hint of chalkiness; more green pears than apples; not terribly complex, but a QPR champion at $35.

Phillipe passed away this year. Pierre is now the brother left. And his son came back to the estate from Paris as a computer programmer and he came back during COVID to run the domaine. One of the original estate in the portfolio.
30 years ago they were known as being out spoken. They were also custodians taking care of the old grape varieties. And those go into all the different wines.
5% or maybe 10% are the other varieties. And Gabe notes that its really dry.
Smells softly fruit, with a fruitiness as entry into the palate, and I suppose the finish is dry, but to me, not terribly dry because the mid palate give some weight to follow it through. Has a bit of an urbane funk to the nose as well.
It's labeled as Brut but you can always trade down. So this could be extra brut. But they decided the market might give push back so why bother?
18 month on the lees, 60% 2020... and then...
Stainless steel with a little bit of wood.

This was a last minute supermarket find to start off an evening of good food and fine wine. I was surprised and found this champagne very enjoyable. It wasn't mind-blowing; it felt a little bland on the palate but still drank very nicely. It had good bubbles, good acidity, and great balance overall. There are lots of lemony and floral notes, along with a bit of chalkiness.
I would definitely drink again.

Disgorged 4/23, good flavor, medium body, bubbles disapated a bit as we drank the bottle, drank easily, dry finish, minerally, nothing special, drank with lobster, might drink again.

Disgorged March 2018. Deep, winy, brioche, maple, ripe apples, losing some youthful effervescence but still taut. Very satisfying and extremely food-friendly.

Quite fresh, young-tasting, not a ton of time on the lees here. Very clean and approachable, moderately fine mousse, somewhat soft on the palate; not sure what the dosage is here but I would prefer it a bit tighter for the style. Not a profound bottle but a quality wine that was popular around the table tonight even with people who don’t like Champagne. $40

Disgorged July 2022, the Aubry premier feels a bit odd and lazy. There’s too much of the vegetal on the nose and melding with the red fruit, this comes across as rhubarb dominant with cherry and herbes de Provence. This feels quite light on its feet, as though it really could have done with more time on lees, which I see is 18 mo. Fine, vaguely interesting - definitely not a re-buy.
I purchased this bottle in 2013 and have been sitting on it since then. It was slightly oxidized, so a lovely golden color. Bubbles were soft and pretty. Flavor was that of mild caramel and toast. We enjoyed this very much.

This was disgorged Jan/2022. Pretty intense aromatics, with notes of citrus, some red berries, too, orange zest, minerality, also some spices, there is also a touch of brownish apple, some autolytic notes of bread/toast, too. It‘s medium-full bodied, has pretty high acidity cutting through the richness and some lower-medium mousse adding to the vinous overall impression. Perfectly measured dosage. Good length, too. A very nice Brut from the very good producer with a very good QPR.

Retail $50. Disgorged?? 35% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, 5% Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau. Again, no disgorgement date. This bottle is a decided drop-off from previous iterations we have popped with a very tart nose of under-ripe lemon, a bit of yeast, and quite mineral. The palate is fine, but not much more than that as it is disjointed, the fruit is overly tart, and just a bit of a mess. Quite a departure from previous bottles, indeed.
Very different from typical big house champagne, almond, citrus, yeasty. Acidity medium plus, finish medium plus. Nice enough to sip by itself. QPR is good.

The cuvée is 55% pinot meunier, 25% chardonnay, 20% pinot noir and 5% a blend of old grape varieties (petit meslier, arbanne and fromenteau). I could not find a disgorgement date on the bottle but I think it is late 2010s.
Apricot colour with pink blush. Persistent mousse with fine bead, even on the second evening. Aromatic with notes of citrus, brioche, almond paste, cinnamon, rock melons and peaches. Fresh fruit dominated with minimal yeasty autolysis notes. Sweet honeyed entry to the palate. Rounded due to the meunier. Mid weight. Clean and pure. Nicely balanced between bready autolysis and sufficient fresh acidity. Rich, fully fruit forward. Uncomplicated and not detailed but pleasurable to drink. A relatively dry impression for residual sugar around 6 gl/rs. Decent length. Accompanies food well. A Champagne to drink and enjoy not to intellectualise or cellar long term.

Fun stuff, one of the better bottles of this I've tasted. Honey, biscuits and whipped butter with salt on the nose. Creamy texture, brisk acidity and tangy bubbles with yellow apples and lemon curd. Notes of sea salt and honey. The wife loved it, as I had hoped. Disgorged July 2019.

Retail $50. Disgorged?? 35% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, 5% Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau. Unfortunately, there is no disgorgement date on the bottle, so I can not be sure of which "batch" this is. Golden in the glass with a decided "older champagne" vibe to it; lemon curd and green apple dominate the nose with caramel croissant along for the ride. The palate is tart and delicious with plenty of fruit as well as a healthy handful of yeasty goodness. Bravo.
Retail $50. Disgorged 2019. 35% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay, 5% Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau. I have always been a fan of this wine and when I saw this on sale at Central Market for $40 (plus another 10% with the purchase of six bottles), I jumped. Pale to yellow straw in the glass with baked apple and peach, plenty of baked croissant, and even some subtle red fruit on the nose. The palate is tart, vibrant, fruity, and delicious with a unifying acidity and plenty of length. Wonderful.
Not very exciting. Very balanced and middle-of-the road in style, but it frankly wants for more acidity. That's what holds it back. Serviceable but lacks some cut. It will be nice to pour at holiday parties rather than a wine which demands attention.

Retail $50. Disgorged October, 2016. Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau (Pinot Gris). About half of the wine comes from a "perpetual reserve" (essentially a solera system without the oxidation) that dates from 1998. I bought this a handful of years ago from Cosco and since I recently bought another three bottles from Central Market, I decided to pop this puppy. While I was not able to find the varietal breakdown for this disgorgement, the fact that it includes six of the seven permissible varieties (poor Pinot Blanc is on the outside peering in) makes it delightful (as so does the taste, naturally). Fruity but also loaded with brioche, tart, but multi-layered and introspective, fun and inviting but also serious and composed. This is some fantastic Champers. If you don't like this? We are pretty much done here.
Lots of flavor, solid bubbles that stayed lively to the last drop, golden color, long finish, good stuff, drank with lobster, will drink again. Disgorged Feb 2021.

A pleasant champagne. There is some richness to it, maybe due to the high percentage of Pinot Meunier. Nothing jumped to my attention, acidity is a bit low, I expected a higher level, this is a house that looks for malolactic fermentation, therefore the impression of lack of acidity and richness can also be due to that. Anyhow the bottle is ready to go.

On opening just an overpowering aroma of yeast. Made me wonder if was flawed. But it was not flawed. In fact on pouring the yeast was not particularly notable — present but in balance. The usual mix of apples, toasted bread, squirt of acid. Awfully good with food.

My last of a 6 pack purchased 6 years ago, and this has held up nicely. Balanced with very good mouth filling intensity, a cider and apple profile, with some savory and minerally undertones. Good, bright finish. Despite some bottle variation, excellent QPR for the $31 it ran me. 90-91 pts.

Retail $50. 45% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, 5% Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau (Pinot Gris). 50% comes from the 2015 vintage, and 50% from a "perpetual reserve" (essentially a solera system without the oxidation) that dates from 1998. It has been a while since we have popped one of these and there seems to be a noticeable difference as this comes off as considerably drier than the other bottles we have tasted. And that is a good thing. It is also fun to remember that this has six of the seven varieties technically allowed in the blend. Consistent notes otherwise, but I think it has improved in the bottle. thedrunkencyclist.com

Just a hint off copper or color. Persistent mousse. Very fresh aroma. White berry and a hint of strawberry. Little to no meaty or autolytic cues with just a hint of yeast. The palate is a continuation of berries. Rich, with good weight. Very tight acidity. Maybe just a little hard. It’s also a little disjointed. Refreshing champagne without the layers I desire.

Further to my note of Dec 10 '19: Another tasty bottle, though this might be showing a bit of age--slight hint of oxidation. Could have been served colder.
P: MF body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish, applish frt met by a LOVELY acidity which keeps things in check into & through the LONG, tangy/SWT finish. Lovely stuff which should be able to serve as both an aperitif & with meals. 12.5% ABV; My EXC/EXC+. [As of late Dec '19, wine-searcher shows numerous sources from $32.94 - $51.23].

{Disgorged Sept 2016; in cellar x 3 years} One of last 2 bottles from a case. Nice line and cut to the flavorset, hint (but not more) of broiche, some citrus, good length. Good QPR. The Meunier and Pinot Noir and other non-Chardonnay grapes make this more interesting to me. Am likely to buy more for short-term (2-5 years) aging as improves with time. Solid wine from a solid producer.

Bought a 12b case for 8/b from a local gourmet grocer about five years ago; this is #9. Light gold, very good pressure and effervescence; light toast, some white fruit that follow on the palate. Tasty, glad I have more but no need to hold. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: For me, scores on a "100-point scale" are misleading. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. This is outstanding- when considering quality, age, and (remarkable) price.

The mousse dissipates quickly, and the bubbles are large.
The nose is slightly yeasty, and that follows through to the palate which is quite dry and the dominant Pinot Meunier present a slightly different profile from typical blends: yeasty, toasty, dry, and a little acidic. For me this is a food wine - the acidity is a bit strong for an aperitif.
It's not my favourite NV champagne by a long way, but it does the job. Reasonable QPR at US$35.

Disgorged in January of 2017. A really great bottle. The nose shows a hint of ripeness to the beautiful lemon, apple, and yeast aromas. After a few minutes in the glass, the fruit is energized with savory elements of ginger, almonds, and chalk. It's dry, complex, a little fluffy in feel, but an energetic bead and a punch of minerality provided focus, drive, and vibrancy to the tasty, orchard fruit and pastry notes. Finishes with freshness, length, and persistence.

12 Days of Christmas; 12/21/2017-1/1/2018 (NYC, Vermont, Boston): From the wine list at Aquagrill (NYC), paired with a dozen briny East coast oysters. This has lain some nine years or more in the "cellar," a purchase from the late and still lamented Wine Expressions in Lisle. So it has some age, which showed in the warm gold color in the glass; the bead was quite large and exuberant and then quieted down to a steady finer stream; excellent balance, a little toasty, medium body, elegant with finesse.

What a great Champagne for under $40. I love the Aubry style, and this is a great entry-level wine. Smells of apricot, lemon, peach tart, some chalky and biscuity notes. Attractive pale bronze color. At the first sniff the wine literally creates a stinging sensation in the nostrils. Quite minerally with very bright fruit of apple, peach and tangerine. Slightly toasty with lesser notes of rust, nuts and spice. The mousse is dense, creamy and very long-lasting. Quite mouthfilling and vinous with good structure and superb brightness to its fruit. Nice firmness and focus. A bit understated aromatically, possessing attractive sour red fruit and almond. Deliciously bitter, lingering finish. Really keeps its composure even when the temperature rises; very food friendly all the way. A great buy at 24 €.

Light golden. Alive on the nose with citrus, sea foam, green apple, ripe melon, and a faint trace of pastry. Palate is savoury, but much more delicate than the brut rose keeping the notes from the nose with enphasis in green apple and crisp citrus fruit, cloaked in a crispy, steely, vein of minerality. Full bodied and balanced ending with a savoury long aftertaste.

Opened at a restaurant with friends- no formal notes. Overall this was showing a fine mousse along with a nose of sweet wheat, floral and mineral-driven fruit that opened up to tangy ripe red apple skin, citrus, yeast, flowers and slate-mineral on the palate. Bright and tangy with enough richness, depth and distinction to make this exceptional for its price point, and excellent overall.

2013 disgorge... among PM dominated champagnes this always impresses me with its class and sophistication... fine mousse, apples, minerals, moderate toast... more power and class than PM typically shows... really nice... great QPR at just under 30.

Fruity, with the pinot spice character, crisp that vintages past, well done and as the last couple of bottles, probably the best I have had out of this line from Aubry.

Disgorged 9/2012. My first champagne with Meunier as predominant cepage (60% Meunier and 20% each Chardonnay and Pinot Noir). Fast bubbles in light yellow reflections. A great nose of fruit (mainly apple and banana) and sweet bread. Aromatic at the palate with a vibrant lemon and lime flavor underpinned by a solid stony minerality. Extra-brut, almost a Pas Dosè. Maybe a little bit too harsh if drunk alone. One note : bubbles faded away quickly only a few hours after opening although a champagne stopper was used.

Old World Blind Tasting >$25 (Bin 75): Small bubbles; green fruit, ginger, sour apple, citrus, grapefruit, not a lot of body or yeastiness; sadly this was forgettable.

I have a new favorite NV champagne! Pitch-perfect for my tastes. Yeasty, toasty, a little deeper than the Blanc de Blancs I've be drinking of late. Just the right balance of sweetness with tons of citrusy acidity. My main quibble was that the bubbles faded quickly once poured into a white wine glass (though the effervescence persisted in the bottle for 2+ days with a champagne stopper). Not the last word in depth or complexity, this is just a satisfying, delightful, authentic NV brut. This bottle was disgorged 9/13 for those scoring at home. Great value at ~$30.

This champagne continues to deliver. I've had this wine a few times now and it always provides a similar experience: A great nose providing a nice display of both fruit and sweet bread with just a hint of sweetness. In the mouth the fruit is showy immediately, leading into some sweetness then a fine, dusty finish, like chewing up a sweet tart. Similarly tart in the finish, this doesn't provide as much sweetness or richness in the mouth as the nose might lead to believe. I'm always happy to try this wine and this bottle with a May/2013 disgorgement date is drinking quite well.

I've had the chance to try what was available as the currently releases from Skurnik for 2013 (this review) and for 2015 (these years are not vintage or disgorgement dates, but release dates). I enjoyed the 2015 release more: the excessive floral note (I think it was the Fromenteau) was toned down. The 2013 showed a strong fresh lily that I found unappealing.

This has become a favorite of mine, and this latest bottle was particularly amazing, with the usual yeastiness joined by vibrant lemon and lime flavors and all underpinned by a tremendous, glittering stony minerality that provided amazing definition for such an affordable bottle.

Post Milwaukee marathon celebratory tipple. Crisp, ripe, slightly tart/bitter bramley apple aroma and flavor. Touch of yeastiness. Lively, briny acidity. Not for those who like their champers soft and/or off-dry.

Jura, Puligny Montrachet and Champagne; 9/8/2013-9/20/2013: Reticent, yeasty [bakery] scent with a whiff of incense; supermodel-slim entry which becomes a little softer on the mid-palate, short finish. 54% Pinot Meunier, 20% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir and the rest a varietal I wasn't quick enough to note. 50% 2010, 50% 2008 juice. Monsieur Aubry insists that Meunier needs time to express itself, so if you have any of this, don't worry about keeping it. On this showing 88P(?)

Disgorged April 2012. Brioche, pear, redvines & NYC Pretzels. Fuller body, but may just be my reaction to higher pinot m/n content then I am used too. Very food friendly. Overall very delightful and nice present to receive.

The NV bottle we tasted was made of 50% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 5% other grapes. 50% of the 2010 vintage and the other half of older vintages even dating back to 1990. The bouquet is not very expressive buts shows some citrus. On the palate bread dough, pear and raspberry. Nicely dry and fresh, but hardly any finish.

Birthday Giacosas (Antico, Chicago IL): nose: well balanced aromatically with tones of pears, white fruits, green apples, and some mineral tones as well. Solid depth, but somewhat straightforward.
taste: medium bodied with medium+ acidity and balanced tones of pears, green apples, and mineral tones. The acidity is refreshing, but the depth is lacking a slight bit.
overall: This was a nice NV champagne. Was expecting a little more from the designation, but a nice enough bubbly.

Blind Champagne and sparkling wines at Matt and Ori's (The new Pink Dolphin): Smells wonderful, sweet apple and pear fruit with some rich cake batter showing in the background. The palate shows delicious flavors similar to the nose but with some crushed sweet tart candy showing up in the finish. Long, fresh expression of fruit, showing less richness. Overall very delicious. Tasted blind, guessed Oregon. (doh!)

I purchased this from a discount site and was surprised to see when it arrived in December of 2011 that it had been disgorged in May of 2004. The colour is rich gold, and the cork was not flared at the bottom, so I suspect less than ideal storage conditions had led to some oxidation. That said, it did still retain a reasonable amount of effervescence and remains quite drinkable. I will seek some out from a more recent disgorgement since I had this in a restaurant and loved it.

Really nice in every way.... nose offers yeast and bread notes, and some lemon and the mouth lends tart apple, pear and a subtle creamy texture.... not rich or buttery, but more akin to a light pastry. There is a slight spice in the finish as well which wraps everything together nicely..... overall a solid offer.

This is about as good as an affordable "house Champagne" can get. There's copious fruit, some youthful yeastiness and an inviting freshness that makes it very easy to drink. The palate impression is quite fine, and overall it's refreshing and fun, which leads to empty bottles.

Some nice apple and yeast notes, and good weight...this is a newly released bottle and although it shows all signs of being delicious, I think that, as with Bollinger, I would enjoy this much much more with some bottle age.

DD: July 2011. Not impressed. Fat frothy bead, coarse flat palate, not much style character or breed. Not much length either. Not a rebuy, not even close. Many better at this price point. Better day two. Rounder, brighter, more knit, more refined, less coarse. This is exactly the opposite of my preferred style however - oxidative, full bodied, nutty, sherry-oriented, brown spiced. I'd guess an eight year old villages. I can see the quality in this, and it has good dryness, just not my cup of tea. Upgraded from 85 to 88 pts.

2011 Masters of Wine Champagne Tasting (San Francisco, CA): 2011 disgorgement, 2008 base. Medium yellow color with medium sized bubbles. Apple nose. Bright medium-bodied dominated by tart apple flavors with some supporting toastiness and minerality. Lively acidity. Medium length finish. A decent enough value for a fresh, fruit-driven, and expressive non-vintage Champagne.

We had this at the start of our 1/22/11 Lamb and Shiraz dinner. It had very pleasant apple, pear, tangerine, brioche, mineral and mild oxidative aromas. The palate followed with apple, pear, tangerine and mineral flavors. The apple really dominated everything. Someone suggested that it seemed a lot like apple cider and everyone else agreed.

Very recent (Septmber 2010) disgorgement. Medium yellow color. Abundant bead. Aromas of baked pear, apple, lemon, and bread. Flavors show the bass notes from the pinot noir in the blend with bread, yellow apple, yellow plum, and a lemon finish that is medium length. Some more time on the cork will help the flavors integrate and deepen, but this is good now and good value at $30. Drink or hold.

Strong peroxide aromas initially but with time and air crushed shells, flint, and chalk emerge. An austere palate of green apple, Asian pears, and chalk. Despite the predominance of Pinot Meunier in this wine, it seems a slightly higher dosage might have helped to bring the fruit a bit more to the fore. Decent but not impressive.

Popped and poured at Nags Head. Disgorged Feburary 2010, so newer batch. Nose of a little dirty hay initially, then bread dough, yeast, good toast. Medium yellow-gold color. Medium, abundant bead. Nose of lemon, chalk, flowers, nuts, and bread. On the palate, this has a fresh nut-bread character followed by a lemon and mineral note with ginger and some floral elements coming in later. With time in the glass, this becomes a bit more broad shouldered and is very satisfying with moderate complexity. Good value here. Ready to drink. May 2009 disgorgement.

I believe this is heavy on the pinot meunier though I could be wrong. In any event, this was disgorged in April of 09 and is staggeringly delicious right now. Seems like it was made in a slightly oxidative style, reminiscent of how full and rich Bollinger's Special Cuvee can be. The color was slightly salmon colored, not quite pink but certainly darker than most. The honeyed/candied flavors, buttressed by a lovely cinnamon note, were powerful and round. I certainly would have guessed Bollinger, or maybe even Selosse blind. I read IWCs note and saw Josh Raynolds loosely compared the prior year's disgorgement to Krug's NV. In any event, just a stunning NV wine for a measly $32.

Very pale yellow in color with nice caramel, green apple and bread aromas. Very "fizzy" with not the same bubbles you would expect in a mass market champaign.

92 Points.

Pretty intense aromatics, with notes of citrus, some red berries, too, orange zest, minerality, also some spices, there is also a touch of brownish apple, some autolytic notes of bread/toast, too. It‘s medium-full bodied, has pretty high acidity cutting through the richness and some lower-medium mousse adding to the vinous overall impression. Perfectly measured dosage. Good length, too. Retail $50.

Return to Piemonte!; 11/25/2021-12/4/2021 (Castello di Sinio, Alba, other various locations): Just a basic champagne which was nice since we were getting some pata negra which wasn’t so much a barolo pairing item and also sometimes it’s good to just refresh the palate some before one jumps into the dinner. Very basic champagne but good for the price.

Retail $50.

Wonderful.

This is an OK NV champagne.

What a great Champagne for under $40. I love the Aubry style, and this is a great entry-level wine. Smells of apricot, lemon, peach tart, some chalky and biscuity notes. Tart and nervy on the palate with crisp acidity and pervasive minerality. Lemon, green apple, the fruit is focused and matched with bright chalk, mineral and seashell notes. Such a killer value. Disgorged Sept. 2015.

NOSE > Big, aromatic sappy/steely, pungent pear/orchard-fruit skin, ginger, anise, lavender, tart-nectarine, & violet.
Very red-fruit/Pinot.
Pretty fruit, minerality, & spice - in that order.
PALATE > Very full, round, dryish (for Brut).
Big minerality.
Tart orchard-fruit skin, ginger, quinine, violet/lavender, red-cherry/cherry-stone, blood-orange & lime-flesh.
Elegantly earthy.
Finish & aftertaste of lime-flesh/zest, lavender, quinine, & tart-nectarine skin.
Very nice, & good value. Big fan of Aubry Bubbles.

A solid choice, but people prefer the other Champagne as it showed more complex and rounded. Paired perfectly with acorn-fed pork Iberian loin.

This had flavors or citrus with a creamy texture. I enjoyed this very much and am now convinced that Grower Champaign is much more interesting and enjoyable than mass market. Will buy this again.
