Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL

Tasted blind. I don't know what was going on with this wine. I will venture it had some unidentified flaw. Nobody would have identified this as Burgundy or even Chardonnay if tasted double blind. I thought it had a cream soda character, others thought it more like root beer. While not overly advanced, it showed a sweet madeirizing character.

Tasted blind. Apple and pear aromas, similar but slightly less expressive and fresh on palate. Good concentration. At its peak.

Tasted blind. Intense ripe apple aromas to start. Similar on palate with some pear flavors as well. Great density, long and powerful. Good acidity, lots of minerality on finish. Very balanced already, I thought it a few years older than 2008. This is the 4th or 5th time I've had this wine, and somehow it surprises me every time with its exceptional quality. Almost everybody's Wine of the Flight.

Tasted blind. Apple and lemon aromas with a slightly floral hint. Flavors of lemon and lemon zest with great oyster shell character. Precise and classically styled Chablis. Seems just to be entering its peak drinking window. Glad I own over a case.

Tasted blind. Apple and lemon aromas and flavors. big scaled and slightly fat character. Very classically Chablis-like, just slightly less nuanced than some other bottles tonight.

Tasted double blind. Ripe, sweet aromas. similar on palate with good spice, but I was very surprised to see this was Gewürztraminer when unveiled...it didn't really show that spice! Very elegant and balanced. When tasted blind, I thought this most likely from Alsace. Impressive.

Tasted blind. Moderate level of sweetness. Lemon oil, lemon peel aromas. Similar on palate with some orange peel as well. Very charming and easy to enjoy, slightly lost in this flight of much sweeter wines.

Tasted double blind. Fairly clearly Sauternes, but in an extreme slightly cloying manner. Very ripe aromas, also quite caramelized on nose and palate. Peach, nuts, baking spice. I was very surprised to see this was from 2001, with it not showing the elegance I normally find in the vintage.

1979 Maurice Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 86 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasted blind. Ripe fruit, clearly mature but I was positively surprised when unveiled as a 1979. Modest spice, moderate length, fairly simple. Not all that interesting to me, others liked this more than I did tonight. Still impressive for its age.

2006 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Vignoble de Vaulorent 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasted blind. This bottle was accidentally inserted in the older (pre-2003) flight and surprisingly (as a 2006) didn't seem out of place. Lean fruit from start-to-finish with reasonable concentration. Lots of acidity and minerality with a firm, structured finish.

1998 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasted blind. Slightly floral start, Very mature, also ripe with some sweet hints. Moderate density made me think a good 1er. Very strong quality for the vintage, but time to drink up.

2000 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasted blind. Apple, pear to start. Mineral-driven with lots of acid, minerality and great textures. Energizing citrus finish. Clearly my wine of the flight when tasted, then subsequently my wine of the night. Somehow tonight's tasting group ranked this #5 in this flight, so I'm not sure what they were looking for.

2000 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot Flawed
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Tasted blind. Moderate nose to start but stripped of fruit on palate, followed by a sour, bitter finish. Musty aromas started emerging after 15 minutes. Slightly corked.

2002 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest 89 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasted blind. Ripe apple on nose and palate with modest spice. Started with good balance, but the wine shortened with more time in glass. Started at 90-91 points, finished at 89. Others liked this more than I did tonight. Drink up.

2002 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasted blind. Fresh, big scaled wine. Good orchard fruit, supported nicely with acidity and minerality. Long, lean and elegant. Very surprised when unveiled. I was expecting Grand Cru, given the wine's concentration and density. I'm not familiar with this 1er vineyard.
