2008 Meursault Blind Tasting

• 2008 Domaine Rougeot Meursault Monatine

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

  Some lime and nutty notes on the nose. Exotic fruit (pineapple) with maybe a touch of orange as well. Sulfur. Slightly bitter and severe finish. While I thought the nose was enjoyable, the palate is somehow boring.

• 2008 Latour-Labille / Vincent Latour Meursault Clos des Meix Chavaux

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

  A little more smoky oak than the Rougeot Monatine. Some reduction as well. White flowers, mineral, some peach. A little soft with pineapple notes on the palate. There's also an interesting salty tang. Not the greatest Meursault but ok.

• 2008 Maison Pascale Doney Meursault

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

  Some raw pop corn (no butter) notes along lemon and light oak. Somehow showing a typical Meursault nose. Oak is more present on the finish with apple and smoke notes. With more air, more apricot/peach yogurt notes along a lactic texture. Not a fan.

• 2008 Domaine Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

  Very shy nose. Quite forward upon opening but this is a wine that needs a litle time to blossom. Green tropical fruit. Most acidic of the 1st 4 Meursault (and in a good way).
  Slightly lactic on the finish at first which became more focused and sharper with air. Overall a very elegant and very nice Meursault, maybe more Puligny like than Meursau-esque.

• 2008 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Vireuils

  A little reduction on the nose. Mineral, elegant and focused. Some lemon and lime. Perfect use of oak. A great bottle that will age gracefully.

• 2008 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

  Interesting to drink it next to the Vireuils. Clearly broader, more fat and riper than the Vireuils. Still mineral but slightly buttery with some tropical fruits and white peach. Still manage to stay elegant and balanced.

• 2008 Domaine Patrick Javillier Meursault Cuvée Tête de Murger

  Interesting wine which really benefited from air. Some honey with a touch of smoky oak. On the 1st sniff almost showed some chenin like qualities. High acidity, texture hints at some batonnage but this Meursault still manage to stay focused. A little hard to read right now but should really improve over the years.

Great tasting even if a few wines lacked true interest. But overall a great feel for the 2008 vintage: good acidity with wines showing great fruit and extract. Nice to see that none of the wines tasted were a bad caricature of Meursault showing too much nutty oak and buttery notes.
