Introduction

Dinner with Alfred Tesseron at Texture London organised by Fine & Rare. A Great opportunity to try eight years of Pontet from 2000 to 2010 in his company.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année 90 Points

    France, Champagne

A nice start to the evening with some vintage champagne.

Brioche, citrus and some butter on the nose. Nice mouthfeel but I prefer the DP 2002.

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A classic Bordeaux to start with. Notes of earth, cassis and tobacco. A slight sweetness to the palate and a medium length.

  • 2003 Château Pontet-Canet 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The hot summer really shows with lots of fruit on the nose. This really is drinking well now.

  • 2005 Château Pontet-Canet 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This really is still in its youth but the nose really hits you with waves of fruit and caramel. Lovely smooth mouth with integrated tannins. Long length.

Good now and will get better.

  • 2006 Château Pontet-Canet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Nose slightly closed nice round mouth feel but a slight wateriness to it. Saying that we had just drunk the '05 and it is an unfair comparison.

Alfred on green harvesting - "I stopped doing that as the grapes just grow back harder just like shaving twice a day."

  • 2007 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Powerful nose with a lot of fruit. Slightly thin on the mouth but really drinking now. I do not think it has the legs to last long term.

Alfred had to revert back to spraying (3 times) this year because of a bad mildew attack. He reserves the right to do the same if needed in the future to save a crop.

  • 2008 Château Pontet-Canet 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Slightly closed nose but a more rounder mouth due to more Merlot in the mix. Lots of complexity and depth in the mouth. This baby is going to be amazing in future years.

  • 2009 Château Pontet-Canet 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

What a wine! Massive fruit hitting you in the face but a palate with lots of depth structure and complexity. Still very young and primary but this baby is going to be wonderful.
Completely different to the other Pontet's we had and an amazing effort. Maybe slightly OTT but that is probably because of its youth.

  • 2010 Château Pontet-Canet 100 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

I have never given a wine 100 points before but I have to give this 100. It is incredible. It has the fruit and depth of the '09 but has more of the classical notes of Bordeaux. There was just more structure there and a better delineation.
We all sat around the table with grins on our faces and declared this the WOTN. Maybe it is because this tasting was in England and we prefer a more classical Bordeaux but wow this wine is amazing. The joys of trying the '09 and '10 together. I look forward to both their developments over the next 20 years and I am sure my thoughts might change.
Stock up and get this if you can.

  • NV Tesseron Lot #53 XO Perfection

France, Cognac, Grande Fine Champagne Cognac

I am not going to rate this as I have not drunk enough cognacs but this really is excellent stuff.

Nose of toffee, figs, chocolate, caramel, apple and prunes. I think you get the general picture that this was one amazing nose. Wonderful deep complex mouth and a great length. I need to buy some.

Closing

An incredible evening of great wines. The highlight of the night was to try the '09 & '10 side by side. The WOTN was the '10 for its more classical style. I have to thank Alfred for his great hospitality and the good folks at Fine&Rare.
I will leave with a final remark from Alfred who looking at his Cognac said that this was what his family did best.
