Flight 3 - Pessac-Léognan whites (4 Notes)

  • 2009 Château Olivier Blanc

Bottled pears in syrup and blossoms at the nose. Silky texture on the palate with similar aromatic impressions and at the same time a good acidity and minerality. Delicious.

  • 2010 L'Abeille de Fieuzal Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Citrus fruit with a typical green sauvignon blanc touch. Very fresh on the palate, with notes of gravel. Light and fruit-forward (although not the too ripe kind of fruit-forward).

  • 2008 Château de Fieuzal Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

The nose is rather closed with some soft white fruit. Much more interesting on the palate; lots of soft oak influences, smoky stones and some pine resin. Promising wine.

  • 2010 Château Brown Blanc

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Ripe citrus and grapefruit at the nose and some gooseberries. Medium-full bodied in the mouth, oily texture with great ripe fruit and some minerality and good acidity towards the finish.

Flight 4 - Château Carbonnieux (2 Notes)

  • 2010 La Croix de Carbonnieux

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Rather closed at the nose. Very seductive on the palate with a typical earthy character. Needs some time to develop in the bottle.

  • 2010 Château Carbonnieux

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Much more open than the estate's second wine, which is curious. Red berry syrup at the nose with some liquorice and soft oak. Great fruit concentration on the palate mixed with lots of earthy notes. Chewy ripe tannins. Will age really well.

Flight 5 - Château Brown (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Château Brown

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Black berries and some mint at the nose, rather closed. Classic style on the palate, well-structured and with sufficient depth but needs some time to come together and show its potential.

  • 2006 Château Brown

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Expressive nose with lots of earthy notes such as freshly picked mushrooms and even truffles. On the palate it gives the same evolved feeling, the tannins are soft and the wine is definitely at a great point in its life.

Flight 6 - Château La Marzelle (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Le Prieure La Marzelle

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Multi-layered evolved nose with distinctive (but pleasant) humus on a background of red fruit. Very open. Concentrated flavors on the palate but the balanced is disturbed by rather aggressive tannins, still pleasant and you could call it rustic but not the way it should be.

  • 2004 Château La Marzelle

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Rather closed at the nose but with some animal notes. Balanced on the palate, round and seductive, with ripe red fruit and very soft tannins. Still very vital on the palate, many more years to go.

Flight 7 - Château Altimar (1 Note)

  • 2009 Château Altimar

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lalande de Pomerol

Not much to say about the nose, very closed. Juicy red fruit on the palate, balanced and with a good spiciness beginning from the mid-palate and some soft tannins at the finish. Appearing rather alcoholic and therefore new-world in style, surely pleasant at the moment but not sure what to think of it.

Flight 8 - Château Phélan Ségur (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Château Phélan Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Pencil, chocolate, blackberries and red fruit at the nose. Very balanced on the palate, with soft round tannins and some hints of black pepper. Long juicy finish. Elegant but probably still needs some more time.

  • 2004 Château Phélan Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Black fruit and some soft oak, nicely opened. Very round on the palate with subtle hints of chocolate and softened tannins. Well-balanced and multi-layered, definitely showing very well at the moment.

Flight 9 - Château Tour de Pez (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Château Tour de Pez

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Soft oak and dark fruit at the nose with a hint of fresh mint. Very deep on the palate with a great freshness, chewy seductive structure with ripe tannins. Nice balance, promising wine.

  • 2009 Château Tour de Pez

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dark cherries at the nose, very deep. On the palate it is lighter than you would expect (certainly when compared with the 2010), very fresh because of this with some pepper and other spices coming through. Soft ripe tannins at the finish.

Flight 10 - Château La Haye (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Château La Haye

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Tobacco, cedar, liquorice and some fruit at the nose. Somewhat rustic on the palate with a green touch at the finish. Approachable, no reason to keep it very long.

  • 2008 Château La Haye

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Rather closed at the nose. Well-structured with good tannins and lot of spicy notes, there is depth. Pleasant.

  • 2009 Château La Haye

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dark fruit, chocolate and some earth at the nose. Good structure: concentrated fruit and loads of chewy ripe tannins but not jammy at all. Powerful but at the same time also very round and with a silky texture.

Flight 11 - Château Siran (1 Note)

  • 2006 Château Siran

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Blueberries, black cherries and violets at the nose. Not much fruit (left) on the palate, tannins are aggressive and appear unripe; harsh green wine.

Flight 12 - Château Tronquoy-Lalande (1 Note)

  • 2006 Château Tronquoy-Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Fresh cabernet dominated nose with hints of coffee, burnt oak, pepper and chocolate. No real signs of evolution. Good depth of fruit on the palate with round tannins. Will still improve over the next few years but also really liked it at this moment.

Flight 13 - Château d'Issan (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Château d'Issan Blason d'Issan

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very open and elegant nose with soft fruit and vegetal notes such as green bell pepper and Pascal celery. Good dark fruit concentration on the palate (certainly regarding the vintage and being a second wine); balanced and very fresh. Surprisingly good.

  • 2007 Château d'Issan

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Rather closed at the nose, the aromas are coming through very subtle but are quit complex and broad. Balanced on the palate, fleshy and with chewy ripe tannins. Some smoky notes also. It is probably not the best time to drink this wine, some more years to open up again should make a great difference.

Flight 14 - Château Sociando-Mallet (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Château Sociando-Mallet La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Very accessible at the nose with dark fruit and paprika powder and other dried herbs. Firm structure on the palate with sufficient acids and delicious fruit reminding of hard candy on the aftertaste. Can use some time to come together but also very pleasant now.

  • 2010 Château Sociando-Mallet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Rather closed at the nose, concentrated fruit and some charcoal. Remarkable depth on the palate, lots of chewy tannins and perfectly balanced (!) with lots of acids. Classic fresh style but with concentrated ripe fruit. Great wine that probably will need at least a decade to somewhat open up.

  • 2001 Château Sociando-Mallet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Complex expressive nose with elderberry juice, blackcurrant and some vegetal notes (such as hay). Great freshness in the mouth with enough fruit left and soft tannins. Softened and open but not very evolved yet. Very interesting to drink at the moment, will certainly last much longer.

Flight 15 - Château Prieuré-Lichine (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine Confidences de Prieuré-Lichine

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Violets and cherries at the nose. Very fresh and pleasant on the palate with great concentrated fruit, the tannins are ripe but still too powerful at the moment, give it some time.

  • 2009 Château Prieuré-Lichine

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Fresh nose with some mint and floral notes. Very elegant on the palate with red berries and soft oak, perfect balance here. Remarkably pleasant and easy to drink at the moment. It is very deep and there surely is lots of aging potential buried under the many layers of seductive fruit.

  • 2010 Château Prieuré-Lichine

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Completely different from the 2009 and very closed at the nose. On the palate it is very deep, the fruit concentration is remarkable, the omnipresent tannins are ripe and pleasant but just too many at the moment. This will need a very long time to somewhat open up and soften. Don't open this if you have it.

Flight 16 - Château Rauzan-Ségla (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Ségla

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Light red fruit at the nose, it appears still young and closed with no real tertiary notes. Balanced on the palate with fresh acids, rather light, it does not have the structure to keep it much longer. Fresh and balanced but not very interesting.

  • 2004 Château Rauzan-Ségla

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Perfumed nose with blackberries, mint and nicely blended spicy notes. Rich on the palate, with delicious fruit and silky soft tannins. Still very powerful and firm, needs more time. Great wine.

Flight 17 - Château Canon (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Clos Canon

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Typical simple Bdx nose, nothing special to note. Same impressions in the mouth; very soft and some spicy notes. Disappointing.

  • 2006 Château Canon

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Perfumed nose with very light and volatile aromas of roses, blossoms and hay. Very expressive. Rich on the palate with chocolate and some notes of flavored fruit brandy; soft tannins. Balanced, great depth and good length; impressive wine.

Flight 18 - Château Smith Haut Lafitte (1 Note)

  • 2007 Château Smith Haut Lafitte

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

The nose is delicate and more open than you would expect at this time; water mint, tobacco and some cedar. Round palate with rich jammy fruit but structurally rather light. Medium finish. Classic style leftbanker and already very smooth, with some first tertiary notes appearing.

Flight 19 - Château Petit Village (1 Note)

  • 2006 Château Petit Village

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Delicate nose with soft red berries and some barnyard notes. Medium-light bodied with fresh acids and pleasant fruit but a bit underwhelming starting from the mid-palate.

Flight 20 - Château Suduiraut (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Château Suduiraut Lions de Suduiraut

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Very clean sweet wine. Raisins and lots of other dried fruits. Definitely made for easy drinking and for more occasions than classic Sauternes; I am missing some crisp acids though to make it a real success.

  • 2003 Château Suduiraut

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Botrytis and butter at the nose, subtle soft oak and roasted nuts. Very concentrated yellow and exotic fruit on the palate; the sweetness doesn't appear caramelized yet, which among other things makes it still appear very young. Richness and great acidity at the same time from onset to finish, really outstanding.

Flight 21 - Secret bottle to end with (1 Note)

  • 1960 Domaine Sainte Barbe Rivesaltes

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Rivesaltes

Dried apricot at the nose with notes of nuts, oak and coffee liqueur; very deep. Still very solid and vital on the palate with a silky texture, flavors of freshly harvested walnuts and maraschino cherries. Fresh and balanced.
