Another 2004 horizontal (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Same bottle as SimonG (the other notes from today were from an adjacent table with a different bottle). A compelling nose, with some sweet decay that at first was slightly offputting but increasingly made sense. Quite complex on the palate, which was slightly lactic, had some graphite and game as well as purple fruit, and (its best attribute) was refreshingly pure and middleweight. Something of a dry finish, but oh-so-friendly to the food (bone marrow on toast in my case). My and the group's #2 wine tonight.

Jonathan’s 2004 Bordeaux (Hawksmoor, Guildhall, London): Lovely pure cassis fruit, just a hint of smoke and gravel, floral top notes. Medium/full bodied, dark fruit, touch of spice, refined (soft) tannins, glides across the palate, fresh acids, long, harmonious finish. Showing its class, excellent.

Bordeaux 2004 20 years on Part 2 (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Lovely cassis on the nose, and also a fatty/meaty aspect. Olives and balsamic vinegar notes interwine. More evolved than the LTHB alongside it, the throttle is opened a little more, deeper, maybe even a little wild, and certainly less feminine that I was expecting. This is a compelling package and my #3 on the night.

Jonathan's 2004 Bordeaux Check In (Hawksmoor Guildhall, London, UK): This is a larger than life Margaux and all the better for it. Some meatiness to it with hints of star anise. Hints of olive brine. A very different bottle to one enjoyed on an adjacent table. Palate is compact but perfectly formed with fine tannins and hints of earth and underbrush. Grew on me.

Jonathan’s/Nick’s 04 Bordeaux (Hawksmoor Guildhall, London): First of a half case bought on the strength of trying in April 06 at the Bibendum Lords 05 EP tasting. Full deep vibrant ruby, finely chiselled, blackcurrant fruit with a beautifully fragrant top note of violet and fresia. Similar on palate. So precise, linear, elegant and long cf the Pav Rouge’s relaxed breadth. Classical elegance in cool marble. ****
