Introduction

This was a special tasting dinner set up for some doctors by a pharmaceutical company who hired a specialist in old and rare wines. It was held at one of the local doctor's house. My neighbor in France who's a doctor invited me. I had probably never had anything over 4 years old at this point, not to mention anything over 40 years and beyond! I was completely blown away and had so much fun tasting and discussing these wines with a bunch of old collectors and wine lovers. I think the scores are a bit high for what they were, but I had little experience at that point. I think if they drank well, then I probably over rated them at the time. The scores I currently have are converted from a 5 point system, and I tended to lower the score slightly in converting them to the Cellar Tracker 100 point system. They let me take home all of the bottles, many with a 3rd or so left in the bottle, and I had most of them again in the quiet of my kitchen the next evening. Even though most of these are not great wines to begin with, I don't suspect I will ever have a similar tasting such as this again! I believe that in France it is much easier to come by old and rare bottless as deep under ground cellars are common place, as are ancient houses and old collections. Most of the bottles were in amazingly good condition that I suspect were hardly, if ever, moved from their original locations.
The wines are not in tasting order.

  • 1870 Château Poussard 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Barre degustation; Light brown-amber, cloudy; light hints of fruit, carmelized, candied cherries, dead leaves, slight astringency; done but intriguing; light, almost zero tannins. 2nd day: Dirt, sediment, grass & weeds, bit sour finish.
NB: this chateau no longer exists and I can't find anything written about it. The label was very obscured, and I was only able to read "186_" or "187_" with the last digit unreadable. So the vintage is a guess from either the 1860's or 1870's.
