Introduction

The last for the year in these series of dinners presented by Anthony D'Anna from Boccaccio Cellars/Mondo Imports. With the exception of a couple of ringers, this was a collection of top 2004 Brunello di Montalcino.

All wines were double decanted approx. 4 hours before the dinner. No detailed notes take, more general impressions.

Flight 1 - On arrival (1 Note)

Parmesan cheese doughnuts

Flight 2 - Salame (2 Notes)

Anthony's home made Salami with bread from Scopri

Flight 3 - Quaglia Arrostita Con Zucchini Alla Menta (2 Notes)

Pan roasted quail with grilled zucchini and fresh mint

  • 2004 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

The first of a pair of big, bold BdM. Deep ruby colour, and deep intense palate. Quite intense, tight, with oak prominent, but huge fruit to back it up. There is still decent complexity, but it needs time, and you do have to like this style.

  • 2004 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Another in the modern style, but pulls it off better than the Valdicava next to it. A big wine, but really well balanced. Gorgeous silky fruit, fine tannins and good acidity. Came across very young, and very good.

Flight 4 - Pappardelle Al Funghi Porcini (2 Notes)

Hand made pappardelle with Porcini ragu

  • 2004 Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino Riserva PS 93 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

A standout wine that hinted modern approach, the fruit is intense yet refined, and has amazing length and persistence. A little hard to discern all its complexities, I’m sure they will reveal them selves with time. It has it on its side.

  • 2004 Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Initially wound quite tight, but did flesh out with some air. Loved the aromatics here, red fruit and spice, inviting. Really this is about structure though, built for the long haul, solid tannins take hold after time. Solid wine but not for now.

Flight 5 - Tagliata di Manzo (5 Notes)

Cape Grim Scotch fillet ‘tagliata’, sautéed silverbeet and panfried Nicloa potatoes.

  • 2004 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 91 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Really enjoyed this Fuligni pair. This standard BdM was more open and inviting, drinking very well now. There is some oak that needs to integrate, but doesn’t detract from a great drinking wine.

  • 2004 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Showing very young, similar profile to the regular bottling, but with more of everything, including elegance. Bright cherry, tar, herbal spice, again some oak showing but not distracting. Super complex and interesting, one of the few riservas to warrant the step up in price. Far and away my favourite of the night.

  • 2006 Il Palazzone Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

This was slipped in to contrast the ‘04 vintages on show. Amazingly fresh and inviting nose, and it is a lovely wine. Serious structure, with a slightly astringent finish taking away slightly. Not quite as polished as others on the night, but decent value.

  • 2004 MastroJanni Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Good traditional style, solid structure, but also pint point fruit profile. Rather delicious really, enjoyable.

  • 2004 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Flawed

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Funky nose, a little cheesy, but also Brett affected? Doesn’t follow through to the palate completely, but still a little off. Seems like some really good, ripe fruit, decent length. Benefit of the doubt, not showing its best.

Flight 6 - Formaggio (3 Notes)

Pecorino Toscano with Mallee honey from Kangaroo Island, fruit compote, potato bread and Happy fruit

  • 2004 Tenuta le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Really inviting on the nose, but not quite matched on the palate. Could use just a bit more fruit and length. Still, not bad value and a nice wine.

  • 2004 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Bit of a disappointment considering the label and vintage. Shows quite bright, with tart fruit, tar and minerality. Mouth feel is fantastic, but is a little short on the palate. A little scalped perhaps?

  • 1971 Tenute Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Lou brought this along as a curio for the group. Tasted blind, most were thinking this was from somewhere in the late 80’s or early 90’s. Showed some browning, but generally quite solid colour. Stinky, and while it suggested being corked, did open up and blow off and was fine, if a little tired. Great to see an aged BdM amongst all the young wines, and although this one would be been better 10 years ago, it was a rare treat.
