In Mauro Veglio's cellar

Introduction

One of the highlights of our Piedmont wine tour - Mauro and his wife, Daniella, entertained us in their kitchen then in the vat room with tastings of the '09 vintage straight from the tap. Really nice people.
Mauro's wine-making seems to be evolving in an interesting direction. Although he used to use quite a lot of new oak over 10 years ago, as was the fashion, he recognises that this was a mistake with Nebbiolo. He's much more restrained now with only partial new oak being used and seemingly dropping every year. The focus seems to be on facilitating the natural terroir of his plots.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Mauro Veglio Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

The opening wine, drawn straight from the vats by Mauro, his standard Barolo. A knockout nose but of course rough tannins.

  • 2009 Mauro Veglio Barolo Vigneto Arborina

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Quite delicate compared to the generic Barolo.

  • 2009 Mauro Veglio Barolo Castelletto

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This one is always a favourite. We had just been looking at this hillside vineyard from out of Mauro's big round kitchen window. This year should be very good due to the extended time for ripening and the extreme diurnal temperatures. Menthol notes which apparently were also in the wines made by Daniella's father who originally owned the plot and made wine is a rather rustic way. I guess terroir shows through.

  • 2009 Mauro Veglio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This is the first time I've tried this and it's clearly a fantastic wine. Made in minute quantities - the vat for this was very small in comparison to the others - and treated like a favourite child by Mauro. This outclassed all the others in complexity, although still a delicate, refined wine. Obviously these samples were difficult on the palate (although not on the nose) - I can't wait to get my hands on a mature example of this.

  • 2011 Mauro Veglio Barbera d'Alba 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

We had this in the kitchen afterwards to refresh our palates. Light and fresh with low tannins. Easy drinking.
