  • Splurged on the 2009 and 2010 Veglio Barolo's for a vertical barometer between the two vintages. Both double decanted and slow-aerated back in the bottle for about 4 hours. Overall 2009 was more earthy, oaky, and definitely tanninc. The 2010 had more bright fruit but was still pretty tanninc with a much nicer length and finish than '09. Heat was evident on both bottles but the 2010 had better balance, the finish on the 09 was noticeably hot and bitter (though both had a bit of thinness from the 14.5% abv). Both need some time for the alcohol and tannins to get along but my feeling is the 2010 holds more promise for development long term.

    The 2009 itself had a predominantly earthy tar-rose-tea nose with cherry, some menthol, and hints of anise with a little oak vanilla thrown in as well. Alcohol was unfortunately evident on the nose. Much of the nose translates to the palate, including a harsh astringent and bitter finish from the alcohol and tannins. $37 at Total Wine.

    Style & Quality: B-. Alcohol and tannins are not in sync with my palate and not hopeful time will bring about a drastic improvement. The upfront fruit and tea notes keep it drinkable.

    Value: B-. For the same price you can get the 2010 and I advise going that route.

  • Our initial thought was very pinot-like. Rather soft with juicy cherry flavors. Very easy to like. (La Morra)

  • In Mauro Veglio's cellar (Piedmont, Italy): The opening wine, drawn straight from the vats by Mauro, his standard Barolo. A knockout nose but of course rough tannins.
