Introduction

The weather in DC sucked today, but I had some friends come in from Philly, and we got together at Weygandt and my place for some wine. May quite a Saturday of it.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2009 Richard Leroy Chenin Les Noëls de Montbenault 91 Points

    France, Vin de France

This is the first vintage I've tried since Richard Leroy gave up the Anjou AOC. The wine's still the same, and just as amazing as ever. Complex nose of pineapple, white flowers, perfume, brie rind, beeswax. The palate shows racy acid but a plump, creamy body. Melon and pear fruit mix with chammomile and honey. Intense minerals all the way. This wine has so much personality and will do interesting things over the next five years.

  • 2002 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore 92 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

What a crazy-unique wine. The aromas exploded with just a half-hour of air, getting better and better with each swirl. Yellow apple, apricot, limestone, coconut shell and a sweet-salty aspect. Tangy acid on the palate, along with crisp minerals. Lemon-lime and papaya meets wax, sea salt and a hint of briny oyster shell. Really fun and intellectual, and I'd love to have this with food and maybe a good decant. I tasted this blind and was all over the map: Chablis, Jura, muscadet. Vatan is the Kafka of Sancerre, and I love it.

  • 2009 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

A slight spritz in the glass. I love the nose, and it just gets better and better with time: white peach, apricot, yellow apple, pure minerals, limestone. The palate tastes of apricot, honeyed tea, honeydew melon, along with notes of mineral and even a hint of cinnamon. Really delicious, but easily drinkable. The acid isn't as dominant as I usually like, but it's an truly delicious Erdener Treppchen. Wish I had more.

  • 2005 Spring Vale Gewürztraminer 90 Points

    Australia, Tasmania, Freycinet Coast

Great combination of dried pineapple, lychee, lamp oil, white pepper and minerals on the nose. Amazing complexity on the nose. Palate shows crisp acid. Fresh pineapple and white peach fruit, rush of minerals, cucumber water, candied lemon, gummy bears. Dry as a bone, full of minerals, racy acid, but a lot of great creamy aspects. Really nice sea salt and crushed chalk aspect lingers on the finish.

  • 2011 Château Montfin Corbières Carignena 85 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

I liked this more than the last bottle I tasted, maybe because it was from a bottle that had been open for a good eight hours. I really like the roasted plum, smoke and earth tones, and the freshness makes this a really easy-drinking Corbieres.

  • 2011 Coudert Fleurie Cuvée Christal 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Aromas of African violets, raspberries, rhubarb, loam. Still tight on the palate, with firm tannins. Flavors of iron and pencil lead accent the raspberry and cherry fruit. Very fresh and pure, but I'd lay it down for two years or so.

  • 2009 Château de la Bonneliere Chinon Les Cornuelles Vieille Vigne 90 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Aromas of pipe smoke, roasted red pepper, tobacco, all on top of mulled cherries. (Awesome nose). Crisp acid on the palate, medium tannins and some fresh red fruit. But this wine is all about the smoke, tobacco, iron, pepper and earth. Reminds me of a campfire in the mountains.

  • 2010 Kellerei Bozen / Cantina Bolzano St. Magdalener Classico Huck am Bach 88 Points

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, St. Magdalener Classico

I don't know why I don't drink more Alto Adige reds. (Well, they're not exactly easy to find.) They're so unique. Made from schiava grapes, this smells like roses, white pepper and bright red berries. Tangy and fresh on the palate, with macintosh apples and sour cherries. Mineral and anise linger onto the finish. Really interesting stuff. I'd love to drink this with some salted fish.
