Introduction

March's theme was 09 and 10 Burgundies both white and red, village level or better. It turned into mostly an 09 tasting, but that's just fine as there was a wide range of good wine to taste through.

Flight 1 (17 Notes)

  • 2009 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Nose: There is a fleshiness to the tones of crushed rocks, tart red fruits, dark red cherries, and some bits of earth tones and spices. Very good complexity with nice depth to go with the fleshier fruit.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. There is good balance and nice depth along with tones of crushed rocks, tart red fruits, spices, and some earth tones as well.

Overall: This is a very nice and youthful savigny. It needs some time to fully come together, but it's hard not to drink right now. There is very good balance on both the nose and palate with nice warmth to the red fruits.

  • 2009 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Nose: Very stylish and aromatic on the nose with complex tones of truffles, black cherries, dark spices, dark red fruits, and a touch of dark berries. The darker tones aren't as brooding as they sound and there is very good depth.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with good tannins and medium+ acidity. This had some very noticeable structure, that while not punishing, was certainly youthful. There were very good and balanced tones of black cherries, spices, dark red fruits, and some earth tones.

Overall: This was a gorgeous wine. It was very youthful, but very attractive as well. This certainly needs some time to fully show itself and it would really benefit from age too.

  • 2009 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vigne 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

Nose: There is an attractive hi-toned quality on the nose with tones of tart red fruits, cherries, spice tones, some red florals, and hints of earth.

Taste: Medium bodied with nice and refreshing medium+ acidity and some silky tannins. The structure is slightly understated and sneaky with balanced tones of spices, tart red fruits, hi-toned berries, and some red cherries.

Overall: This was a pretty and precocious Fourrier. It showed some of the warmth of the vintage, but it had an understated quality on both the nose and palate as well.

  • 2010 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: This has a more steely nose with tones of crushed rocks, lemon zest, peaches, some custard tones, and a touch of citrus. There is very good depth on this along with showing a freshness as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with sharp medium/high acidity. The structure is noticeable, but there is a real silky feel with tones of crushed rocks, peaches, white fruits, citrus tones, and some bits of custard as well.

Overall: While this is very young, it shows a lot of class. If this doesn't suffer from prem-ox then it could really develop into a top notch 1er.

  • 2010 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: This has a fatter quality to the nose with tones of custard, flinty minerals, white peaches, and some tones of lemon curds. There is very good depth with some style to this as well.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity. The structure is relatively imposing with well balanced tones of custard, minerals, white fruits, and some lemon curds.

Overall: This is very young, and like the other Niellon if this can avoid prem-ox it should really develop into something really good.

  • 2009 Dujac Fils et Père Gevrey-Chambertin 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Nose: There is a nice freshness to the fruit with tones of cherries, red berries, earth tones, spices, and red fruits. This has nice depth for a village win with good balance as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with good chewy tannins and medium+ acidity. There is good balance to the tones of red fruits, spices, earth, and cherries.

Overall: This was a very good and young Dujac Gevrey. There is good balance on both the nose and palate with solid depth as well. It could use a couple of years to fully show itself, but like other 09s I've had, it's hard not to pop one now.

  • 2010 Henri Jouan Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Nose: Very fragrant and hi-toned with fresh tones of dark red fruits, fresh picked berries, spice tones, red florals, and red cherries. There is nice depth for a village wine with very good balance too.

Taste: Medium bodied with refreshing medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The structure is a bit sneaky, but there are very polished tones of dark red fruits, spice tones, red florals, and red cherries.

Overall: This was a very pretty wine. It actually tightened up with air, but still showed good class to it as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. Well balanced with tones of white fruits, blood oranges, and some apricots with a touch of custard.

Overall: This is a well balanced and drinking village white. There is solid depth and the structure isn't too big.

  • 2009 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

Nose: This is very aromatic with balanced tones of asian 5-spice, tart red fruits, cherries, mushrooms, and dark red berries. There is solid depth to this with some good style.

Taste: Medium bodied with good silky tannins and medium+ acidity. The structure is on the sneakier side as it shows more on the back end. Still there are balanced tones of asian 5-spice, red cherries, mushrooms, and some dark berries.

Overall: This was a elegant and young Volnay. There is good balance to it with solid depth. The fruit shows a more red side to it along with setting a nice base on both the nose and palate.

  • 2010 Coche-Dury Bourgogne 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Nose: Very hi-toned and aromatic with balanced tones of fresh picked berries, spices, red florals, and red fruits. This has extremely good depth for a bourgogne.

Taste: Well balanced with a very good medium feel and medium/high acidity with some nice tannins. There is very good structure to this with sexy tones of fresh picked berries, spice tones, and red florals.

Overall: This is coche, so producing something great at this level is expected in many ways. Even with it being coche, it's still a bourgogne and is a wonderful one at that. It can get better and has room to grow as the underlying structure is on the youthful and refreshing side.

  • 2009 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Champans 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Nose: This shows a slightly lusher side to it, but with well balanced tones of asian 5-spice, dark red fruits, dark red cherries, dark berries, and some earth tones as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and nice youthful tannins. The structure isn't overwhelming, but it is certainly there along with tones of asian 5-spice, dark red fruits, earth tones, and some dark red cherries.

Overall: This is a really nice and young volnay. There is good balance along with a nice darker take to the tones on both the nose and palate.

  • 2009 Domaine Dublère Corton-Charlemagne 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Nose: There is good balance to the nose with tones of marshmallows, vanilla beans, oils, pears, and some lemon curds with a touch of oak. The nose is a bit on the chunky side and isn't showing the depth I would expect from a grand cru white burg.

Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. The depth is lacking for the level along with tones of marshmallows, vanilla beans, oils, lemon curds with an oakier base.

Overall: While this is a very good white burg, it didn't hold up to what I would expect from a Corton Charlemagne. The oak was slightly heavier handed for me.

  • 2009 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chaumes 86 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

Nose: The nose was very lush and almost california-like with tones of quince, spiced pears, creams, lemon curds, and peaches. There was good complexity, but it was lacking depth.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity, but the acidity was a bit flabby. The feel is also more lush with tones of quince, pears, creams, and lemon curds.

Overall: This shows a lot more flesh and lacks some acidity. It's not completely flabby, but it would be nice to have more of a spine. This definitely isn't one to age and should be drunk earlier.

Nose: Well balanced and aromatic nose with tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, earth tones, dark spices, and some bits of dark berries.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and some sneaky tannins. The structure isn't too imposing and there is good depth to the tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, dark spices, and some dark berries.

Overall: There is some baby fat that needs to be shed on this, but it's a really well balanced savigny. There is a nice dark red fruit core with good depth on both the nose and palate.

Nose: There is a real perfumed take to the nose with tones of dark red fruits, earth, red florals, dark red cherries, and some spice tones. While there is a perfumed quality to it, it is also on the tighter side as well.

Taste: Medium bodied with tart medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The structure is certainly there, but there are nice and balanced tones of dark red fruits, earth tones, spices, and red florals.

Overall: This is a really good auxey-duresses. There is good balance on both the nose and palate with a nice bit of dark red fruits and earth tones as well.

  • 2010 Jacques Puffeney Poulsard Arbois

    France, Jura, Arbois

This was as tight as a drum. I kept a glass to the side and it kind of opened up to reveal tones of pepper, dark red fruits, and some earth tones. The structure was also very imposing and it's just very hard right now to get a full read on it.

  • 2009 Calera Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan

Nose: Very different nose from the burgundies, but it works well with tart red fruits, spice tones, dark red cherries, and some floral tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and silky tannins. The feel is very balanced with tart tones of red fruits, spices, dark red cherries, and some floral tones.

Overall: Obviously this was a wild card in an all burgundy lineup. It showed very well with good balance on both the nose and palate.

Closing

It was nice to have a smaller crowd for one of these tastings. It allowed for more talking to people and not feeling rushed to get to bottles. There was a nice cross section of wines to choose from, which was also great as well. I always love the generosity of the people that come to these tastings and this was no different. I look forward to the next one.
